"We Want You to Feel At Home
As an enlisted member new to the Air Force, your accommodations will feel a lot like a college dorm. You'll have your own private room that you can personalize to your tastes, including a private bath, full-sized refrigerator and computer desk. In the common rooms, you can catch the game on the big screen TV, hang with your friends or cook meals in the kitchen.
Homes on base are custom designed to meet the needs of growing families. Most residences feature attractive interiors, updated appliances, multiple bedrooms and baths, and grassy backyards. Best of all, they're often within walking distance of schools, stores, playgrounds, and community pools.
If you live off base, you'll have a housing allowance that will probably cover most of your rent. Many single enlisted members also find roommates to help share the rent on a bigger place.
No matter where you choose to live, you'll probably find yourself spending a lot of time on base, taking advantage of the tax-free shopping, discounted food and free medical care that will help lower your overall cost of living."
WHAT A BUNCH OF BULLCRAP!!! I got that straight off the www.airforce.com website. Ok, let me break this down for you... college dorms are bigger than this room, nothing is private in the military, we still get our rooms inspected whenever they feel like it. Yes, they will come into our rooms while we are at work and walk around unannouced and check for anything they consider to be illegal or indecent. So forget about "personalizing to your tastes". It's impossible. And also they check to see how clean our rooms are... I'm an adult living pretty much on my own and they still do this. The people who live in houses get inspected as well, but not as harshly. Ok, what's next? "Private bath"?? No, sorry, I share my bathroom with someone. She's loud and dirty and puts up pictures of Audrey Hepburn on the tile walls. There is nothing private about that. I get a full size refrigerator, but no money to buy anything to put into it. I get to eat at the "chow hall", which tastes pretty much how it sounds. It's absolutely disgusting. I get paid about $2,000 a month, but you can go ahead and subtract taxes from that, $230 for the "chow hall" food that's "free", my car payment, my student loans, my Best Buy payments for my laptop, my cable bill, my internet bill, and then I might have some money left over to live and do something besides sit on my ass. Not to mention that I like to give some money to my mama b/c she needs the help. Ok, we have community kitchens. It's gross. Everyone uses them but doesn't clean up after themselves. I refuse to use a countertop that 100 other residents have used and not cleaned. Call it OCD or whatever, but I won't do it. I'm requesting to get out of the air force when I hit my two year mark this August. Hopefully I get it. There's actually a good chance. So pray for me.
In other news... I'm bored out of my mind right now. It's raining out and for the first time in my life I actually wish it wasn't. Not that I could go anywhere. I'm on telephone stand-by... once they call, we all have to get to work ASAP. It's to see how quickly we can respond if it were a real world situation. Did I mention that it's Saturday... yeah, I'm not getting paid extra for this crap either. Go air force...
