Name: Emil Castagnier
Canon: Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New World
Age: 16
Class: Swordsman
Timeline: End of Chapter 4, which is before he arrives at Meltokio. In other words, he still doesn't know Decus had been going around posing as Lloyd.
Background: Over ten thousand years ago, when Sylvarant and Tethe'alla were still one, the world did not have mana in its natural state. However, that changed with the arrival of Derris Kharlan, and Ratatosk, sensing that the energy from the comet would negatively effect the world, called upon the eight Centurions to help him distribute and manage the flow of mana. Once that was done, he created monsters to help maintain the balance of mana, and then settled in the Ginnungagap to watch over the gateway between this world and the demonic realm, Niflheim.
Fast forward nine thousand years, during the Ancient Kharlan War, Ratatosk met Mithos and his party, and forged a pact with him, gaining the Derris Emblem in the process. Later on, Ratatosk was betrayed by Mithos, and from that betrayal, he began to hate them, going so far as to place a curse on anyone entering the Ginnungagap with the Derris Emblem. After those events, he fell into a deep sleep.
He was awoken some time after the World Regeneration by Sybak researchers Aster and Richter Abend. They looked for his help in reforming and maintaining the balance of mana, as it was unstable due to the events of the World Regeneration. Ratatosk agreed to do so, but fueled by his desire for revenge for the death of his Tree, he ordered his Centurions to eliminate all humans and half-elves. Shocked, Aster and Richter argued with him, leading the summon spirit to kill Aster. Enraged, Ritcher dealt a mortal blow to Ratatosk, causing him to revert to his core form. Tenebrae, the Centurion of Darkness, took his core and fled to Palmacosta. There, Ratatosk, having lost his memories, assumed the form of Aster, and took on the identity of Emil Castagnier, a boy who had lost his life in the Blood Purge. From that point, Emil's personality was created, and Ratatosk receded and allowed the constructed personality to take over.
From there, the
events of the game occurred.
Personality: If there was a word to describe Emil at a first glance, it would be "timid." He's very cowardly, quick to apologize, and is often downcast. This is most likely a result of his aunt and uncle, as well as the town he lived in. They all disliked him, and often ignored him or bullied him. His aunt and uncle disliked him for being indecisive and timid, while the town disliked him for his own hatred for Lloyd, and his support for the Vanguard. All of this had a negative impact on his personality, and it shows itself very clearly in the way he acts. He usually lets people walk all over him, and never complains about it outwardly, though he may make a few comments in his mind. Point in case, Marta putting him on a pedestal. Her image of the boy was extremely skewed, and only after he finally told her off did she begin to truly see him.
Though he's cowardly, it doesn't mean he shies away from human interaction. Rather, he's very friendly, and rarely becomes angry. To friends, he appears quite cheerful, though he may be quick to become downcast if certain things are mentioned. He does a have a few touchy points though, for instance, Lloyd Irving. He absolutely hates the man, going so far as to actually yell at friends if they defend him. This is one of the defining points of Emil. If he absolutely hates someone, it's difficult to reason with him on that subject. Only when he's shown definitive proof that his anger is unfounded does it become possible to talk with him about it. If he's proven wrong about his conceptions of a person he hates, he's quick to drop it, as shown by his quick bond with Lloyd once it's discovered Decus was the killer.
This is only one side of Emil though. Through the pact he made to become a "Knight of Ratatosk," along with power, he also gained another personality, dubbed the "Ratatosk Mode." This mode is usually triggered by battle, or when Emil's emotions reach the extremes in anger. Emil also switches to Ratatosk Mode when he feels he can't do something. Not so much as in he's helpless, but he just thinks he can't do it. Those are usually the times Ratatosk Mode comes into play. Once the situation passes, or Emil calms down, he reverts to his normal self. It is, however, possible for Ratatosk Mode to be maintained for long periods of time, even when he's not angry or in a dire situation.
In reality, Ratatosk Mode is actually the manifestation of the Ratatosk's true personality, as Emil is only a construct of the summon spirit. Originally, Ratatosk seemed only like a more violent side of Emil, but as the group hatched more and more Centurions, Ratatosk became more aware while Emil continued to fade.
Ratatosk is aggressive, arrogant, prideful, and very selfish. Essentially, he is the exact opposite of Emil. He looks down upon kindness and generosity, citing it as a weakness, going so far as to insult Emil. He dislikes having to follow orders from others, as he views himself as above almost everyone. It is also for that reason that he is rude to everyone, even friends. He views the weak poorly, having once before stated that they will be swept aside and crushed by the powerful, and absolutely hates those who don't stand up for themselves, or act cowardly and shamefully. He treats those kind of people even more poorly than others, calling them useless and disgusting.
However, as Emil continues his journey, Ratatosk grows to have a softer side. It generally only shows itself around Marta, the only person he cares for. He shows honest concern for Marta's well-being, and is genuinely hurt when it seemed like Marta preferred Emil over him. He also becomes a little bit more reasonable, having developed bonds with the group he travelled with. Even then, he can still treat them all harshly, because he doesn't know how to interact with others properly, and prefers to hide his true feelings.
A big part of Ratatosk's personality stems from the betrayal of Mithos and the death of the Great Kharlan Tree, the tree he protected. Both of these events cause him to have a deep hatred for humans and half-elves, as well as view them negatively. This hatred and negative view is deeply ingrained within him, as he was quick to want to kill humans and half-elves again when he regained his memory, despite learning of humanity's good side when travelling with Marta and the others.
Appearance: Emil has short, blonde hair, and a lick of hair that defies gravity and sticks straight up. As himself, he has green eyes, but as Ratatosk he has red. He's somewhat short in stature, standing at 5'7” in height. He's also rather slim, perhaps looking even a little bit girly. After making the pact with Tenebrae, he wears a long, blackish blue coloured scarf and a blue tube top of sorts, with the back length reaching midway down his calves. He also wears black, poofy pants and arm warmers.

Future Plans: None, really, but if the game gets a Lloyd, I want to see how he interacts with him, since I am pulling him from before he realized Lloyd was not the one who killed his parents.
Roleplay Samples:
1st Person - [The feed opened up to the face of a young, blonde haired boy. Said boy exclaimed in surprise, before staring at the screen curiously.]
Did I turn it on...?
[Realizing that it was a video that was broadcasting him, he flushed a little in embarrassment, and then spoke up.] U-um, does anyone know where this is...? And... has anyone seen a girl with long, brown hair, and flower accessories in her hair...?
[Emil wondered if that was a good enough description of Marta. There were probably plenty of girls with long, brown hair, and he couldn't help but think his description of her hair accessories was rather vague. There were probably all types of flower accessories out there, so probably wasn't a good enough description of Marta.]
Oh, and she has blue eyes, and wears brown and white clothing...
[It was probably a good enough now. There would be little chance of another girl having all those features Emil had listed. Emil stopped talking, and waited for someone to answer him.]
3rd Person - Ratatosk was in a bad mood. Firstly, his other self had somehow stupidly landed them in a completely different world, with pretty much no way of getting back. They'd lost Marta and the others in the process, meaning they were stranded in an unknown world, alone. Secondly, said other self had decided that apparently helping the residents of this world was much more important that searching for Marta and continuing their quest to find and get the Centurions before Lloyd did, so now he was stuck doing a quest that his other self had accepted.
Ratatosk growled, and slashed at a monster charging at him. What the hell possessed his stupid other self to take a quest from the people of this world? They weren't important! It was more important to find Marta and finish what they were doing!! The red eyed boy continued venting his frustrations on the monsters attacking him, dealing blows and attacks more vicious than normal. That, however, did little to settle his anger, and once all the monsters were dead, he continued storming about angrily. He decided he would finish this quest as quickly as possible, and then go search for Marta by himself. He wouldn't bother to rely on his weak other self anymore, there was no doubt he would do something stupid again.
