Personality: Lucius Malfoy is, on the outside, a cold hearted and ruthless man. He portrays that he is better than almost everyone else because he has pure blood and therefore looked down on all Muggles, Muggleborns and Halfbloods, including his own house elf. But his prejudice didn’t stop there. He also liked to insult the Weasley family who, even though they were pure of blood, were too poor to count in his eyes. It didn’t help that they associated themselves with Harry Potter either. He even used Ginny Weasley in her first year at Hogwarts to open the Chamber of Secrets. This brutality almost killed Ginny and soon after Lucius lost his house elf. This enraged him and shows how small a temper he has.
During his time at Hogwarts, Lucius was trained in many fields just like any other student. He was a part of Professor Slughorn’s Slug Club and was also a Slytherin Prefect. These things show responsibility and talent that perhaps he didn’t know about, hence his joining the Death Eaters even though he later betrayed Voldemort for several different reasons.
One being his family because behind the mask he shows to everyone else, Lucius loved his wife and his son. Draco’s placement at Hogwarts rather than Durmstrang was due to Narcissa not wanting her son to be educated so far from home. But this didn’t stop him having expectations of his son. Lucius wasn’t impressed when he found out a Muggleborn, Hermione Granger, was beating him at every subject. But even through all this, Lucius still spent his time during the Battle of Hogwarts searching for his son rather than fighting.
Two being Voldemort’s attitude towards him after his return. Lucius had been, not only a faithful Death Eater but also, part of Voldemort Inner Circle, one of his more trusted followers. So when Voldemort accused Lucius of not going to find him after his downfall, it was worse than some of the others who hadn’t tried. Lucius, in his cosy manor, didn’t want to be put away in Azkaban for his crimes while working for the Dark Lord. So unlike those committed and loyal to Voldemort like Bellatrix Lestrange, he lied to the Ministry and escaped sentence. When Voldemort found about this, he ordered Draco to kill Albus Dumbledore as an indirect punishment to Lucius. He even had to give Voldemort his wand shortly before the 31st July 1997, which was the biggest insult of them all. The safety and security his position of Death Eater used to hold was gone and Lucius began to see past it into a new light. This shows intelligence and critical thinking.
Third being his own cowardice. During the Battle of Hogwarts, he searched for his son but this could have been fear and shame of what he had done and who he was betraying. He could tell Voldemort was going to be defeated at last and wished to stay on the winning side, or at least, the one which remained alive.
Abilities: Usual magic of a wizard. He went to school at Hogwarts and therefore knows the basics of all lessons but after he became a Death Eater he also learnt the Unforgivable Curses.
