The Immediate

I got an e-mail at the beginning of the week about a Marine Band opening. I haven't been very interested in military music because I don't see myself in a military lifestyle. Considering I have no real future plans, I said, "Why the hell not?" My biggest fear or skepticism is my ability to handle the physical side of things. Boot camp, primarily. As it stands, aside from marching band in high school, my life has been relatively non-physical. Every now and then I get into an exercise kick that lasts for a couple weeks, but then months stretch between each of those islands of physicality. I want to get into better shape and I struggle to stay motivated, so perhaps that will be the motivation I need. I need to drop about 40 pounds to even be considered for the military. The music side of things is much less intimidating. In fact, in talking with the Audition Coordinator, the daily schedule is really what appealed to me. 7-4 every day, rehearsals and individual practice time. That sounds fantastic. The largest factor is that military music is highly respected. If I were to get in, it really does begin my music career.

Another option is an internship through Yamaha. I applied for that this morning. It's for an Artist Relations position. I always say I'm not much of a people person, and this is very much people oriented. That's another personal goal of mine--becoming more comfortable interacting with people. In the grand scheme of things, interacting people is a key point for a happy life. Humans are, after all, social creatures first. The fact that I could develop as somewhat antisocial, or rather, with that conception, is rather silly. Do I want to become a social butterfly? No, of course not. But I should be able to interact with just about anyone for a brief period of time without stutters or issues.

Nothing else is really on my horizons just now. Currently, Kyree and I will be moving back to my parent's house sometime in July. It's not ideal, but it's free. There are even a couple music teaching jobs in the Lima area that Kyree is applying for. Me, hopefully I can develop a studio. I know a number of band directors in the area now. I'll try my hand at subbing. In Ohio, so long as you have a Master's, you can sub in the public school system. Otherwise, I want to practice and try my hand at some contests. I'll look into Doctoral programs at that point, as well. OSU has been on my radar for a long time, and I'll give it a go for certain. So we'll see what happens.

Otherwise, in order to lose weight I've been trying to eat less. So far so good. I haven't been doing it long enough for any sort of differences to be noticed yet. Today I also started walking to the office. It's about three miles from my apartment. So six miles total. Today Kyree and I drove into town and did some walking around, then I came in to work. I'll be walking completely home. So not quite the six miles today, but that's fine. This will be me working up to jogging and whatnot, as well. I need to start doing push ups and sit ups and other body weight exercises as well.

Maybe the Marine Band won't work out, but at least I'll have started exercising. When Kyree and I get to wherever, I'd like to get a bike and go riding every day.
