Only 4 days until I take off for a few weeks in Israel and a weekend in NY! I'm going Sunday (the 15th), coming back late on Feb. 5. I'm going to be in Israel for 2 1/2 weeks - 1 1/2 weeks as part of a birthright trip (Jan. 16-26) and a week to see family. On my way home, I'm going to be in New York for a weekend (Feb. 3-5) to see Marc and travel around. I'm also hoping to tour NYC on the 16th - I land at JFK airport at like 7:30 in the morning, and have to be back there by 3:30 in the afternoon. Hopefully I can navigate the subways well enough to see some cool parts of NYC and...not miss my flight =).
I'm looking forward - though honestly, I'm looking more forward to seeing New York than I am Israel. It's not that I don't miss family (I do; I haven't seen my relatives in 2+ years), or that this is a new experience (for the first time, I'm not going to Israel when it's sweltering hot, and I'm hopefully seeing some parts of the country that I haven't before); but really, a weekend in NY with a friend is just really awesome! I'm giddy =) Now I just have to...start packing.
What I'm also looking forward to is being done with law school apps. Who'd have thunk that writing a 2-page personal statement could be such a bitch? I don't know what law schools, if any, will accept me, but I do know that I'll be relieved to be done with the application process. And, for what it's worth, I still have my backup plan lined up (it'd mean living at home another year, which sucks, but I'd probably continue working as a tutor and/or something else, and apply to grad school in sociology) if need be. I'm still considering an advanced degree in sociology, either in place of a law degree or alongside a JD. Somehow, I can't see me really wanting to work the 80+ hour weeks demanded of rookie attorneys, nor can I see me feeling too satisfied with a job that required as much arguing as being a lawyer does. I'm seriously thinking being a prof. would be nicer (more relaxed job setting, fewer hours, etc.). Who knows, maybe I can become a law/sociology professor (work in both fields). Or something. Ah well, guess I'll decide when the time comes.
On the bright side, I'm going to SaberCats practice tomorrow (first time I'll see an arena football practice, could be cool), and I'll probably go to some Sharks practices and games after I get back from Israel/NY. And I'll be tutoring 2 people at least once I get back, too. Still working with the 7th grader I've worked with since September (I feel loved, his parents aren't hiring a replacement tutor for the weeks I'm gone b/c they like my style/work so much) and the woman who studied for the real estate exam (will either help her prepare for the exam or work on reading comprehension). I may also try posting on things like Craigslist and Monster.com to see if anyone will hire me as a tutor outright, as opposed to part of a tutoring company (I figure I can charge as much per hour as companies do - $50-60/hour, and have some wiggle room if parents want the price to come down, and still make more per hour than I would through a company). And if that doesn't work, I'll still tutor through the company I work for and grade papers. Either way, I should have some money still coming in, which is what I'm looking for.
On the crappy side of things, I lost my ATM card (or had it stolen). Found out Saturday when I went with Daniel to the Cal-Oregon State basketball game (Crappy result - though apparently our taunts of Sa-sha, Sa-sha - of one of OSU's players got noticed by his teammates (who laughed/smiled) and him (who smiled/glanced back, after he hit a shot)). I wanted to pay for both of our tickets as a Hanukkah/New Year's gift to him, and given my lack of cash, was going to pull my ATM card out of my wallet...when I noticed it was gone. I called the bank after the game (used parent's card, and will pay them as soon as I have my ATM card so I can withdraw cash), but still, not fun. Hopefully I get the card by Friday or Saturday, or I'm screwed for my trip.
Guess that's it for now.
