Tokyo Godfathers
What happens when three homeless persons (a transgender, a drunk, and a teenage runaway) stumble across a baby in the garbage late one Christmas night? Apparently this. Convinced that the baby has been thrown away by society, as they were, the trio wrestle with keeping the baby, and turning her over to the police. When baby Kiyoko proves a little too much for them to care for, they find that they've already become too attached to her to give her over to the life of an orphan. So it is that they embark on a Christmas-time journey across Tokyo to track down the girl's parents and find out for themselves why they abandoned their baby.
This epic by Satoshi Kon, a legend of anime, is a true Christmas masterpiece that has me laughing, crying, and just plain entertained every time I watch it. Satoshi's amazing attention to detail puts him on a level that rivals Miyazaki when it comes to pure art-form; from photo-realistic backgrounds, to character animation fluid enough to be rotoscope--even though it isn't. Combined with a luxurious colour palette, enchanting score, and a truly amazing vocal cast, Tokyo Godfathers is as much a feast for the eyes as it is for the heart.
