....your current student "friends" you on facebook?
I've got no problem being her friend. She seems like a nice girl. I have former students friended on there. But they are FORMER students.
I have a couple of people "friended" on facebook that I only know from online ventures, such as Livejournal, or other fansites. I'm not ashamed of who I am, even in the company of strangers I only know from obfuscated 1MB or smaller icon photographs and goofy diary entries, poetry, or fanfic about comic book characters.
It's not like I have anything that I really want to hide from her. It's clear that I am geeky and into comics and sci-fi/fantasy movies just from my mere presence. (Gee, could the pictures of Gaiman's Death, Blue Beetle, and scene from Lord of the Rings on my lesson plan binder be a giveaway? Ya think? ) It's not like that's something I am professionally embarrassed by, although I suppose some people would probably tell me that I should be.
I'm thinking that the issue lies more in the separation of student and teacher, at least until after her grades are posted. Then we can bomb each other's pirate ships and superpoke each other to our hearts' content. I think I will tell her that after class tomorrow-- that I look forward to being able to freely "friend" her on facebook, but don't feel ethically comfortable doing that until after her grades are posted.
Would you be offended, as a student, if a teacher told you that?
