I sympathize with all the people in California whose homes have been taken by fire. My sympathy is tried, however, by some of those who have been interviewed on the news channels recently. One man related how a neighbor had awakened him and his family at 4 a.m., warning them of the fire. His wife managed to grab the cat but dropped her purse. A woman wouldn't leave her purse behind unless flames were licking at her heels, so this must have been quite an escape. The husband was also worried about some precious keepsakes he'd left in a safe.
Now, I may be a hick from the midwest, but if I knew that fires had been spreading all around me for the past week, I would:
a) have my car filled with important stuff, ready to go
b) take turns with my spouse doing sentry duty 24/7
c) probably not need to do the first two because I'd be long gone to a Holiday Inn, far away from potential danger
I would not
a) tuck my kids into bed
b) go to sleep myself and hope for the best
c) rely on my neighbors to give me a shout out
And that's my negative, non-supportive post for the day.
