I grew up with Jeremy Brett being The Sherlock Holmes. And that means no, I repeat, no deerstalker. It also means a Dr Watson who is a capable character and not a bumbling doofus.
So when I look at a Sherlock Holmes moive or read a pastiche, that's what I'm looking for, or rather, not looking for.
A deerstalker means that producers didn't do their research, and a Dr Doofus means that they had no idea what to do with Dr Watson. If I see any of those, or both of them, I'll close the book and leave the movie theater.
In Guy Ritchie's Sherlock Holmes movie there was no deerstalker and Dr Watson was great! So I liked the film already upon seeing that. The rest of the movie was, to put it short, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle meets Jules Verne in the grittiest, most realistic version of Victorian London milieu I've ever seen.
I enjoyed myself, and would recommend other to go see the film. Just bear in mind that Robert Downey jr, who plays the title character, is not Jeremy Brett
