The first time I saw a car, I had no idea what to make of it. It was rather frightening, to tell the truth. A pair of those "headlights" came sweeping out of the darkness at me one night as I was walking along the road towards Collinsport. I nearly died from the shock (figuratively speaking, of course). I had not yet gotten used to electric light at that point, nasty, harsh stuff that it is, and to get stabbed by those beams poking out of the front of that... that noisy, smelly carriage!
Well, I must say, I was not prepared for any of this, not at all.
Cars were just the most startlingly strange thing of all at first. I was used to horses, and there just weren’t any when I got out. None at all. I still miss them.
Electric light was a more subtle nuisance, and one that I could do without very easily when I restored the living space at the Old House. Indoor plumbing... another mystery. The first time I saw a toilet, I flushed it several times right in a row, just to see how it worked. Roger had a fit. The plumbing up at the Big House was not in the greatest shape, of course, since it had all been installed, somewhat haphazardly, before the War. "World War Two," Elizabeth said, and I had to pretend I knew what she was talking about.
Water pipes were something else I dispensed with at the Old House. I don’t think Willie ever forgave me for that. That trip out to the outhouse was a long one in the winter, but what did I care? I never needed to go.
