“You’re in control, just like a child” - Madonna (& my friend Jenn)

My friend Jenn, a regular on this blog (Jenn, you’re up to 6 tags! Congrats!) is expecting a baby, fairly imminently.  She’s just about the cutest pregnant woman ever.  I don’t have any pictures to prove it because she won’t let me - or anyone else for that matter - take any.  Not that I would post them here; I just want to have them.  In an effort to get my way I told Jenn that one day the baby might want to see pictures of her with child.  It didn’t work.

Still, there isn’t much Jenn won’t do for this soon-to-be kid of hers.  That’s the way it’s supposed to be, and as the birth date nears, Jenn’s maternal instincts are kicking in big time.  This is the girl I used to describe as my edgiest friend.  Once she had dental work with no Novocain, and now she emails me pictures of her sonograms with notes like, “Doesn’t she have the cutest little chin you’ve ever seen?!!!”

I pointed the changes out to her.  This is what Jenn had to say:  “You know, before you get married, you have to decide if this guy is the one you really want to spend the rest of your life with. It’s potentially a lot of time to invest in another person, so it’s important to be sure.  Is it worth the effort?  Is it worth that fact that sometimes he’s going to leave his dirty socks on the floor, and demand that I change the channel when Project Runway is on, and just generally be annoying?  But this baby doesn’t have to prove anything.  She doesn’t have to have good hair, or be a good conversationalist.  She doesn’t even have to be nice.  She just shows up, and she’s got VIP status.”

“It’s like Madonna says,” I told her.  “You’re in control just like a child.”  (For those of you who aren’t up on your Madonna quotes, that’s from “Like a Prayer,” which is only one of the best songs EVER.)

“That’s exactly it,” Jenn said.
