Cover Reveal: ALL THE THINGS YOU ARE

Nov 30, 2010 10:36

It’s up on Amazon, and Goodreads, and bn.com.  Since I have a Google alert set up for my name, I’ve also seen it on a couple blogger sites.  So it seemed time for me to post the cover of my next book, ALL THE THINGS YOU ARE, right here:

Oh, I love love love love this cover.  I always feel weird saying that I love something about a book I wrote, but I think I’m allowed to say it about the cover because I had absolutely nothing to do with it.  Isn’t the girl in the picture is so pretty?  I wish I knew her name in real life, though I guess it doesn’t matter because to me she’s Carly.  There’s actually a moment in the book when Carly is sitting in a car staring out a rain-splattered window.  Her expression here captures exactly what I was trying to put into words.

And yeah, she’s named Carly for Carly Simon.  Just like I wrote Sheryl Crow into POSITIVELY because I wanted to meet her and get to be her friend (it’ll happen, any day now), I’m a huge Carly Simon fan and I think if she ever met me, she’d want to hang out with me.

Actually, I have met her:  The week before I took the bar exam, my sister Alyssa and I went to a small concert for Sally Taylor (that’s Carly’s daughter) and Carly was there.  I was so overwhelmed and in my own world of reciting property law mnemonics in my head that I didn’t notice her right away.  There was a cocktail hour on the patio and Alyssa grabbed my arm and said, “Don’t cry.”  I turned and spotted Carly and burst into tears.  I also spilled the drink I was holding all over myself, so Alyssa made me go inside with her to dry off.   We sat down because Alyssa was afraid if I went back outside and stood up for too long I’d faint.  A few minutes later, someone tapped me on the shoulder and a voice I knew so well said, “Excuse me, but is the seat next to you taken?”  I said no, it wasn’t, and in fact she could have my seat if she wanted.  But she said the seat next to me was just fine.  Oh my God, CARLY SIMON WAS SITTING NEXT TO ME!!!  For well over an hour!!!  Later that night I called Amy to sob to her all about it, and she said, “Oh, this means you’re going to pass the bar.”  You see, anyone who knows me well knows how important Carly is in my life.

I made a playlist of my favorite Carly songs and had it on in the background on a loop as I wrote the book.  Here’s the flap copy for the final product, coming to a store near you on June 14, 2011 (oh, and Carly’s stepfather is named for my very own Faux Pa):

Carly Wheeler is used to having the kind of life other kids envy.  She’s a popular seventh grader at a prestigious private school.  Her mom is a stylist for the hot soap opera Lovelock Falls, and Faux Pa (what Carly calls her stepfather) loves her just as much as he loves his real kids.

But the day her mother is arrested for embezzling funds from her job, Carly’s life becomes crazier than a plotline on the show.  Suddenly instead of trips to the set, she’s accompanying her mom to the lawyers’ office and the courtroom.  Newspapers chronicle the whole mess so everybody knows, and Carly’s closest friends start avoiding her in school.  Her parents can barely look at each other.  Worst of all, Carly is no longer sure how she feels about her mother.

In this authentic story about a timely topic, Courtney Sheinmel shows what can happen when the world crumbles down around you and you’re left to pick up the pieces - even though it may not look the same when they’re put together again.

carly simon, all the things you are
