Vacation of Critters

I’ve lived in New York City since I was nine years old, land of concrete and glass and steel. But I’ve been spending a few days in full-on Critterworld, aka Fire Island, and just until tomorrow, I get to pretend that I’m really outdoorsy.

Here are a few things that were hanging out nearby today:

So many deer. And so far, all but one that I’ve seen have had antlers. That means they’re all boys, right?

I thought it was a cricket, but when I sent a picture to my nature-loving niece, Nicki, she wrote back, “Oooh, a cicada!” So I stand corrected. She also wrote that I should be more open-minded about him, and maybe not shriek the next time I see him or one of his pals. She really expects too much of me.

There are SO MANY Monarch butterflies here. I heard that Fire Island is on their migration path. Pretty cool, huh? They’re beautiful, but I didn’t want to touch them. But I could spend all day with the critter they’re flocking to-my friend Adele’s four year old daughter (previously seen on this blog in full dragon costume). Also, this little guy.

Pictured on his one month birthday.

Okay, gotta go now and attend to my million bug bites.
