Summary: After an unforeseen fight, Kame finds himself in the hospital with some legal issues. How is cop Koki going to help him out of it?
“Are you serious?” Kame groaned, as he twisted his key in the ignition again and again, but his car just didn’t want to start.
“I guess I’m walking today.” He muttered under his breath, grabbing his briefcase and started on the long trek to the bank where he worked. Of course that had to happen today of all days, because Kame had a meeting with a very important client early that morning. Maybe he could call his co-worker Nakamaru and tell him he was running a bit late. He sighed, figuring that if he walked fast enough, he would make it on time. He could already tell that this was going to be a long day.
--
When Kame got to work, it was complete hell. People were everywhere, and suddenly they were short staffed so Kame was being pulled in so many different directions to help customers. He managed to keep his cool, but he also managed to miss his meeting. He could only be thankful that the client had agreed to let him reschedule to a different day. Ueda Tatsuya was his name Kame believed, but he didn’t have time to think about it at the moment. Nakamaru was being of no help, spending almost an hour with the same customer, leaving him to deal with everybody else who needed assistance.
To say Kame had a busy day would be an understatement.
After his exhausting work day, Kame was relieved to find that he could finally go home. He loosened his tie with his free hand as he walked slowly. He realized that people could really suck sometimes, considering over half the other employees of the bank decided not to show up that day, leaving all of the work to three of the ones who did show up. He couldn’t help but feel angry about this, but it’s not like there was anything he could do about it. He sighed angrily, and then turned around when he heard a commotion coming from the other side of a busy street. What he saw truly astounded him. There was this huge man, hovering over a woman who was practically cowering. Kame could tell he was yelling things, and he was even pushing her. Something snapped inside of Kame. Why couldn’t people just treat each other with respect? Surely everybody deserved at least a measure of that. He found himself impulsively running across the street to the woman’s aid. As best as he could, he pushed the guy away from her. He gulped slightly when the guy towered over him. The guy was huge!
“What the hell are you doing, man?” The man snarled at him, pushing him away. Kame stumbled, but managed to keep himself from falling.
“I’m trying to help somebody, what the hell are you doing?” Kame retorted, getting back in the man’s face. He started to regret it when the guy started cracking his knuckles menacingly. Kame let out a small whimper before his fist landed hard on Kame’s face. He heard the woman shriek as he went down.
“I’ll go get help!” She cried, as Kame tried to get back up, sporting a bloody nose.
“Is that all you got?” Kame mocked, feeling sudden adrenaline run through his system. All he felt was surging anger when he drew back his fist and went to punch the larger man, but he was evaded, and then kicked to the ground. He flinched at the pain in his knee, but he stood again.
“My sister can beat me up better than you.” Kame fake laughed, mocking the man. He thought that maybe he should stop, considering there was a dark vein throbbing on his head.
“I bid you a good day sir.” He said in a low voice, turning to limp away as fast as he could.
“Not so fast punk!” He was then grabbed by the collar, and whipped around to face the older man, who was now breathing in his face. Kame flinched at the horrid breath he had. The last thing he was aware of was a crack as his head hit the concrete, before everything else disappeared.
--
Kame was sure he was in heaven when he woke up in a room that was overly white, but then the thought disappeared as the pain came back. He groaned loudly, and reached a hand up to touch his head, to notice it was covered in bandages. He tried his best to sit up, only to notice his leg was also in a thick cast, and the sharp pain shooting through his abdomen wasn’t very pleasant either. He shouldn’t have picked a fight with that man, he couldn’t win and now he was in the hospital. Kame plopped back down on the pillow just as the doctor walked in.
“Ah Kamenashi-san, you’re awake.” The doctor noted, walking over to check something on a chart. Kame just nodded feebly and sighed.
“You are quite lucky to have gotten here when you did.” She told him. Kame looked at her quizzically, hoping for an explanation. He felt bad, but wanted to hear what all had happened to him.
“You were brought here after a fight. You have a broken nose, dislocated knee along with a cracked bone in your leg, multiple stitches in your head, a cracked rib, as well as a whole bunch of cuts and bruises.” She read off dully. Kane groaned again.
“You’ll be in here for observation for the next few days, next time don’t pick a fight with somebody you can’t handle.” She concluded, giving him a sad smile as she left him alone. Kame gaped at the door where she left. Were doctors really allowed to say things like that to their patients?
Kame looked to the small table beside the bed, and noticed his cell phone there. When he checked the time, he noticed it was 8:00 at night. He dialed a familiar number and listened to it ring, waiting for him to pick up.
“Hello. This is Nakamaru.” A familiar voice greeted.
“Hey Nakamaru-kun, this is Kame, can you tell Taguchi-san that I won’t be in tomorrow? I would call him myself, but I don’t have his number.” He explained slowly.
“I suppose, but why won’t you be in?” Nakamaru asked dully.
“Um, I’m kind of in the hospital.” Kame told him sheepishly. Nakamaru was a good friend of his, so he trusted him a fair amount.
“Eh?!” Came loudly from the other side. Kame flinched and held the receiver away from his ear. “Why Kame, what happened?”
“People are assholes, that’s what happened.” Kame huffed angrily, remembering the evil looking face of the man who sent him there. There was silence from the other side. Kame could almost hear Nakamaru’s “…” over the phone.
“I just got into a fight with somebody twice my size, and now I’m banged up pretty bad.” He admitted. He felt embarrassment, but since it was Nakamaru he was talking to he didn’t really care. Nakamaru sighed.
“Kame, what happened? You’re usually not bad tempered.”
“I don’t know…He was messing with this random girl and I just got really mad.” Kame pulled his good leg up against his chest, and wrapped his arm around it. Nakamaru sighed again.
“Alright, I’ll tell him. You go and get some rest. I’ll come visit you when I get off work tomorrow.”
“Thanks Nakamaru-Kun, alright I’ll see you then. Bye.” He hung up the phone. Kame guessed it would be a long few days.
--
Kame woke up the next morning to somebody prodding at his head.
“Ow! What are you doing?” He groaned. It still hurt from the impact on the concrete.
“I’m checking the bandaging.” The doctor told him, feigning innocence. He noted to himself she probably could’ve been gentler about it. Kame rolled his eyes and didn’t say another word. After checking a few other things silently, the doctor turned to leave.
“Hey sensei,” Kame called to her. She turned to him with a questioning expression.
“What is there to do here? I don’t want to sit here all day and do nothing!” He complained, causing her to laugh.
“Watch TV or something.” With that, she was gone. Kame scowled at the door, and flicked on the small TV with the remote provided. The first thing he saw was a news show, where Sakurai Sho was the newscaster.
“Boring,” he sighed, continuing to flip through the channels. He had no luck finding something that would be of any interest to him, so he settled on a lame looking cooking show. He didn’t bother following what was going on, because he wasn’t interested. The host seemed to be really enthusiastic about it though. He sighed, figuring he’d be stuck on bed rest for the next few days. He wasn’t used to this kind of situation at all, since he was usually always on his feet. It felt somehow relaxing, but way too boring. He didn’t like it. He didn’t even have a book to pass the time. Maybe his hectic days were finally catching up to him, because he found himself drifting off yet again.
--
The next time he was fully awake, it was evening. He had been half awake around noon, because a friendly looking nurse had brought him lunch, but he didn’t stay awake for long. His eyes cracked open, and he noticed a very tense looking Nakamaru sitting on the chair by his bed, looking uncomfortable and stiff. Kame knew Nakamaru hated hospitals, so he was grateful that he was willing to come and visit him.
“Oh, Nakamaru-Kun,” he flinched as he tried to sit up and properly greet his friend. Nakamaru looked surprised that he was suddenly awake. Nakamaru gently held onto his shoulders so he wouldn’t strain himself trying to sit up.
“How are you feeling Kame?” He asked, slight concern lacing his tone.
“Like a got beat up by a sissy.” Kame joked, cautiously moving to lie back down. Nakamaru sighed at him disapprovingly.
“I’m confused Kame, this is very unlike you.” Nakamaru scolded. Kame rolled his eyes.
“I know, I don’t know what happened back there.” He admitted. “It’s like my impulses controlled me for a short amount of time.” Nakamaru frowned. To save from getting scolded again, Kame just shrugged.
“Well what’s done is done. I realize it was a really bad idea now that I’m in the hospital with a broken leg and other injuries.” He sighed. Nakamaru suddenly stood up and then went into his bag, pulling out a book, an electronic game, and a few magazines. He then gave the items to Kame.
“Thanks, Nakamaru-kun! You’re a life-saver!” Kame exclaimed, grateful for something to pass the time. Nakamaru nodded slightly.
“I should get going now. I might come back tomorrow.” Nakamaru stood up, and bid goodbye to Kame before walking out of the room. Kame stared at the book in his hands. It wasn’t something he was overly interested in, but it had to do. At least he had something now.
--
The next morning when he woke up, there was an unexpected visitor in Kame’s hospital room. It was a taller man, wearing a police uniform. He had curly black hair that went down past his ears, and a hat on top of it. Kame became nervous, wondering what business a police officer had with him.
“Must be about the fight,” Kame whispered to himself before trying his best to prop himself upright on the small bed without causing himself too much pain.
“Hello officer, how may I help you?” He asked nervously. The man turned around, seemingly startled.
“Oh, you’re awake,” He said while walking towards the bed while getting out a small notepad.
“I’m here to question you about the events that happened a couple days ago.” He seemed to fumble with his words a bit. Kame peered at the man’s nametag, which read Tanaka Koki.
“Alright, ask away.” Kame leaned back a bit. Surely he couldn’t be blamed for this, and maybe he could turn on his charm for the hot officer.
“There were confirmed eye witnesses that said you started the fight, is this true?” He waited for Kame’s answer, eyes poised on the notepad. Kame hung his head.
“Well, I suppose that’s true. But that man was harassing a woman. I was just trying to help like the upstanding citizen I am!” Koki chuckled at that, jotting something down.
“Didn’t you think to call the police, instead of getting directly involved?” He asked with a frown. Kame smiled sheepishly.
“No… but I guess I should have. Look where it landed me.” He laughed bitterly, Koki giving him a pitying smile.
“The man claimed you started it, and he wants to press charges.” Koki admitted. Kame’s jaw dropped.
“Can he really do that? He doesn’t have a scratch on him and I’m here in the hospital because of him!” Kame exclaimed. Koki tucked the notepad back into his breast pocket.
“I said I didn’t recommend it, but he is insisting. If it continues like this we might have to go to trial.” Koki told him. After a pause, Kame spoke again.
“Are you really supposed to be telling me all this?” Kame asked, definitely confused. Koki cleared his throat.
“Technically not unless it’s definitely set to happen.”
“Then why are you?”
“I don’t know.” Koki gave a small laugh. “It just kind of came out.” Kame thought there was something weird about this guy, but he found him charming none the less.
“If I tell him I won’t press charges is there any way we could just drop this whole thing?” Kame asked, thinking out loud.
“I suppose it’s possible, but that’s really up to the offender.” Koki told him. “Well, thank you for your time, Kamenashi-san. I’ll keep in contact.” He bowed slightly, and left the room. Kame watched him as he left, slightly enchanted by the way he moved. After he was gone, Kame sighed and relaxed his stiff form, noticing a burning feeling in his cheeks. What was this feeling?
--
When Koki got back to the station, he felt more drained than he usually would have. That Kamenashi guy sure had a lot of energy, despite being restrained to that hospital bed, and he wasn’t there for all that long! But Koki had to admit, his sleeping face was cute. He wouldn’t have been watching if Kamenashi hadn’t been sleeping when he first arrived.
Somehow Koki felt pity for him. He thought it was odd, considering this was just another case, but Koki couldn’t help but feel as if there was a connection between them. He got a surprise when he accidentally bumped into his senior, not paying attention to where he was going.
“I’m sorry, Ohno-san!” Koki apologized, bowing as the older man adjusted his hat.
“Not a problem Tanaka-kun.” He smiled back. “I know I’m your senior, but Ohno-san is my father.” He joked lightly. Koki laughed, and then bowed again.
“Hey Tanaka-kun, would you like to go fishing with me this weekend?” He asked, looking hopeful. Ohno always wanted to go fishing. Koki sighed. He hated to let Ohno down, but he had a lot going on too.
“I’m sorry Ohno-san, I can’t. I’m dealing with a case right now and I’m not sure how long it’ll take.” He rubbed a hand through his longer hair. Ohno nodded, only looking slightly disappointed.
“That Kamenashi guy?” Koki nodded.
“The other man wants to press charges, and now I don’t know what to do.” Koki picked up a cup of coffee that was sitting there and took a sip. Ohno stared at him, seemingly not knowing what to say.
“Well, you’ll figure it out.” He told Koki with a pat on the back. Koki sighed. Ohno never changed. He was supposedly one of the best in the business, yet he always refused to help others with work. Maybe it was because he actually wanted the others to figure it out on their own and use their own brains, or maybe he just actually wasn’t that smart. Koki sat down on a free chair to consider the possible options. He could always go to the guy and tell him Kamenashi was willing to drop it, but he didn’t know how effective that would actually be, considering he seemed to be dead set on making him pay somehow. Maybe if Koki told him it was forbidden in this situation he would reconsider… Koki sighed, leaning back on his chair and tipping his hat over his eyes. He couldn’t seem to get Kamenashi’s face out of his mind. Especially his cute grin. Something about the guy had enchanted Koki, and he wanted to go see him again. Something in his mind was drawn to the younger man; he just couldn’t tell what it was about him.
--
Nakamaru visited him again later that afternoon, and this time he brought an unexpected guest with him.
“Taguchi-san?!” Kame gasped in pain as he shot up in shock. What was his boss doing here?
“Hey Kamenashi-kun, I just wanted to see how you were doing.” He gave his trademark grin, which made Kame relax a bit. “Since Nakamaru-kun told me you were here, I was kind of worried so I decided to come with him to visit you.” He said, walking further into the room. Kame smiled and nodded.
“Thanks Taguchi-san, I’m doing a bit better now.” As he said that he noticed Taguchi’s eyes move towards the cast on his leg. He gave an awkward laugh.
“Nakamaru-kun told me you were defending someone. Even though you ended up here, it still makes me feel happy, that there are still good people like you out there.” Taguchi laughed. Kame nodded slightly, looking downwards. There was an awkward silence as Kame stared at something in the distance. Nakamaru snapped his fingers in Kame’s face.
“Kame? What’s wrong, you seem distracted.” Nakamaru stated. Kame gave a forced laugh.
“I’m fine, just thinking about the cop that came in earlier to question me.” Nakamaru’s eyes widened slightly.
“What’d they say?” He asked anxiously.
“He said that the guy who beat me up blamed me, and wanted to press charges.” Kame said forlornly. Nakamaru took a seat in the chair beside his bed, as Taguchi stood there awkwardly.
“Well I have somewhere to be, I’ll leave you two alone. Feel better, Kamenashi-kun.” He was gone before the last word left his mouth. Kame let out a laugh despite the situation.
“So what are you going to do?” Nakamaru asked. Kame looked down.
“I don’t know. I asked Tanaka-san that if I told him I was willing to drop this he might revoke the charges. He told me it was unlikely.”
“I don’t understand why this man thinks it’s okay to press charges. You’re the one in the hospital.” Nakamaru huffed. Kame nodded sadly.
“Trust me, I don’t either.” He said angrily. “This whole thing was a stupid idea.” He plopped back down, covering his eyes with his arm dramatically.
“I’m sure it will be okay,” Nakamaru said, trying to be consoling. Although to Kame he was coming off as plain awkward.
“I hope so…I just can’t keep my mind off that cop though.” Kame blurted, turning bright red when Nakamaru’s eyes widened in surprise.
“What do you mean?”
“I can’t stop thinking about him, there’s just something about him…” Kame trailed off, staring into the distance.
“Oh Kame please don’t tell me you’re fantasizing over a cop now.” Nakamaru sighed disapprovingly. Kame shook his head feebly.
“I can’t say I’m fantasizing, I don’t know what I’m feeling.” He admitted. This conversation felt awkward.
“Just be careful okay? Remember last time this happened you ended up with a restraining order?” Kame flinched at the memory.
“It’s not my fault Matsumoto-san thought I was stalking him,” Kame muttered under his breath. Nakamaru sighed.
“I hope you know what you’re doing here.”
“There’s nothing to know.” Kame told him. “It’s not as if anything is going to happen. It’s probably nothing. So don’t be such a worry wart Nakamaru-kun.” Kame teased. Nakamaru smiled, seeming to be relieved.
“I hope you’re right, but I got to get going now. See you later.” Nakamaru stood up and left. Kame was alone again, and he didn’t like it. His mind was too full to possibly sleep now.
--
“Yo Tanaka, somebody called and said Akanishi and Nishikido are vandalizing again, can you go deal with them?” A call from an office across from his made Koki jump.
“Can’t you please? I’ve got to go do more questioning.” Koki called back. He heard the man utter a “fine” before getting up to leave. Honestly, did those two do anything else? The station received a call at least once a week from somebody complaining about them. It was always something juvenile, like putting soap in a fountain or spray painting the walls. It’s like they were adults with the mind set of rebellious teenagers. Koki was sick of it, but it’s not like they could be put in jail over petty crimes like these. Koki stood up and adjusted his uniform. He had to now go question the perpetrator about what he wanted to do. Koki hoped he could convince him not to press charges. Kamenashi didn’t look like he was that pressed for money, but he didn’t deserve it at all. He tipped his hat up. This would probably be a long day.
