This is the story of one of the most enchanting moments in my recent life. The appearance of a new friend when I needed one most. This is the story of how I found a kitten at 2:00 in the morning.
After a long and emotional day, I found myself sitting on the corner curb outside my house staring at the full moon. It was now August 1st, the Wiccan holiday of Lammas, which marks the beginning of harvest seasons and preparations for God's descent into death. The full moon shone brightly, framed in a "V" between two large pine trees. And for the first time in a long while, I searched deep within myself to talk to Diana, my Goddess.
Many emotions swirled inside me , but most prominent were defeat and confusion. "Why? Why did this happen to me? What next, huh? What am I supposed to do now?" Now for some reason, I have always felt that Diana watches me very closely. My faith is very strong and this story is a prime example of why. She never loses the opportunity to respond quicker than I could ever expect.
A tan, four-door car pulled up to the stop sign and parked. The woman driving got out and reached into her back seat. After rummaging for a while, she shut the door again and got back into the driver's seat. She turned off the dome light and began to pull away. But before she did so, she cracked her door open and threw out a half-eaten Arby's chicken sandwich and a small kitten, no more than four months old. The kitten looked around, lost and abandoned in the light of the street lamps. I called it over.
I don't know if it was the state I was in or the tragedy of this kitten, but I fell instantly in love. I opened my mouth simply to say, "Hello, Diana." I had no idea whether she was male or female at the time, but my instinct was correct. We played together for a half hour or so. She was solid black, save for a small white patch on her belly. Her eyes were a light, orange-yellow with a hint of green, almost the same shade as the moon above us. She was my Lady Diana, my moon princess.
As I held her and petted her, her soft purring soothed my troubled heart and gave me many answers. All my murky thoughts were replaced with one thought, one purpose: the well-being of my new friend. I knew that no matter how dim things seemed, there was always something else to love, somebody in need of a caring heart. The Goddess had made her reply and the love I had for this kitten allowed me to hear it.
My new dilemma, then, was what to do with her. I certainly couldn't bring her to Hawaii because I had no place to keep her. Mom may accept a new kitten but Dean wouldn't. And I loved her too much to just let her go to starve. I brought her to our back patio area while I went inside for a moment. I told Guy that I had something to show him and brought him out.
After playing for a while longer, he remembered that Dan and Jen had wanted a kitten not too long ago. So there was to be her new home. But we had to keep her overnight. Guy offered his room, but I wouldn't let him. If Mom or Dean found out, they would probably kick him out. I, however, had a clean slate.
I didn't get much sleep that night. The kitten was both adorable and horrible. Eventually, though, after a long night and a hasty, ninja-like exit in the morning, we smuggled her to Dan's house. Of course, they both accepted her. Jen was reluctant until she saw her face. But through all that, the kitten had found a home and I was satisfied that she would not be without the love that she deserves.
So that's my story. Faith is a powerful tool and easy to lose sometimes, but never underestimate the serendipitous effects of deities in our lives.
