It is indeed a red bellied, the red on the belly is only visible on adult males during breeding season. When it is visible, it is between the legs and the tail... so "belly" is a little bit off. ;) I have several breeding pairs around the cabin. I live in the woods, so this place is woodpecker heaven for every version that is common here.
When I was younger, I always wondered why this one was not the "red headed woodpecker" until I saw one of those... and it made sense.
