[What did Mrs. Brisby do today, one may ask. Usually there is no answer, as she does perfectly fine keeping to herself.

Not today. She shifts a bit uncomfortably, fidgeting. It's clear enough, at least, that she is incredibly uncomfortable.]

Can... someone explain what a "pet store" is to me? Or... explain what a "pet" really is.

I don't ( Read more... )

[I-is that a talking mouse? Well, um. Surprise side, there's a question to be answered. Even so, her words are a little slow as she considers the fact that she's apparently addressing a tiny mouse lady.]

Um, a pet store is where you buy pets. They're domesticated animals you take care of and befriend.

And keep in a cage?

[She's not mad or upset if her tone is any indication but she is very shaken and uncomfortable.]

Well, not usually. Depending on the animal, they're usually left out to roam once someone takes them in. Keeping them in cages is to make sure they don't run off.

[Though, from an animal's point of view . . . ]

That just seems... strange to me.

Not to be rude, but... it seems a little... arrogant? Or, rather, superior.

I guess it only seems right to us humans because we're so used to it.

It is a little arrogant when we think about it, isn't it?

...I wonder, though... if... perhaps my world really is different. I had thought it perfectly normal that people were surprised to find me speaking - no mice speak to humans.

But... the mice in the pet store...

What about them? Do . . . do they speak, too?

That's just it, they don't. They're... I don't know. It's as if they aren't even mice. They seem no more aware than an insect or a spider.

Maybe it's because they were bred and raised here. You're from another place, aren't you?

Y-yes, I'm from another "world", from my understanding. I just... lived in a field, on a farm. I just lived there with my children and lived... a normal life... [...well, almost, those past few days were kind of...]

[She listens, clinging to every word and eventually wearing a somewhat sad look when she hers the end.]

A normal life, is it? I'm sorry that had to be taken from you by coming here. Are your children with you?

N...no. They're at home.

I guess it's better that way since they're not trapped here. But still, you must miss them dearly.

I do, ever so much, it's so lonely without them.
[She shakes her head, sadly. She didn't like to admit it.]

I wish they were here, though, so I could keep them safe.

[Oh . . . She decides that it'd be best to try cheering the little mouse lady up.]

I'm sure they feel the same way, and that they're safe wherever they are at home. It's lonely without the children, but let's have faith in them.

I hope Teresa remembers how to give Timmy his medicine... I didn't tell Auntie Shrew...

[Fuss fuss--okay she shakes her head to snap out of it.]

I-I suppose it's out of my control...
