51.4 - Marilyn Monroe quote

Feb 02, 2009 01:32

[Not binding on any Peyton. Namely written because Luke floundered too long and needs to move on.]

["A wise girl kisses but doesn't love. Listens but doesn't believe. And leaves, before she is left."

-- Marilyn Monroe]

It took three knocks for Peyton to answer the door, an exasperated Luke on the other side. Stepping closer, Peyton closed the door enough so that all Luke could see was Peyton and Brooke's couch behind her.

"Luke," she said, her voice both grateful he was there and suspicious at the same time. How Luke wished she had sounded happier. "What are you doing here?"

"I should have proposed that night."

Peyton felt like a freight truck had slammed into her, her gaze falling, expression distant and broken, not how Luke had hoped she would be after he had said something like that. In her defense, this was coming out of nowhere after too many weeks where Luke sat, floundering.

"Luke," she managed before being interrupted.

"I should have. I know that now. You told me that every night you say yes. Say yes, Peyton," he said, pleading. "Say yes. Just...say yes," he tried again, pushing tears back because he was not going to cry. He was going to win Peyton back.

"I think I should go," a voice said from behind Peyton. "I'll call you," he added.

Looking down, Peyton averted her gaze, stepping back and revealing Julian, the producer on Lucas' movie. It had been almost too much when he had learned of their connection before the USO show, but here and now? This was too much. Too fucking much. Julian pulled his shirt on, giving Peyton another Luke before walking past Luke, not looking back. It took all his strength not to punch him right here and there.

"...Julian," he asked, the tears now appearing, one falling and then another, anger setting in to mask how truly hurt he was.

"Luke," she tried again, tears waiting to fall as well.

"Julian," he repeated, gulping down a breath and looking up. Shaking his head, he looked at Peyton one last time before turning back the other way, and not looking back.

It took three knocks for Peyton to answer the door - and three knocks to break the two of them apart for good.
