49.1 - What's missing?

Jan 19, 2009 19:48

No, I'm not, I'm not, I'm not. I just..I need you to trust me, and believe me when I tell you that my heart is with you. A part of me feels like ever since we got back together, you've just been waiting, waiting to push me away.

In a perfect world, Peyton wouldn't exist. Brooke would have grown up a lonelier but stronger girl and maybe, just maybe she wouldn't have even met Lucas. Hopefully, by some twist of fate, she would have. And maybe she would've been a better person for it. Nothing was wrong with waiting in a boy's backseat as long as she got what she wanted. And she wanted Lucas.

In sophomore year she wanted Lucas. At first, she went after Lucas because Peyton had wavered in her own pursuit. It was in her nature. Brooke, having woken up on the conniving side of the bed, orchestrated an embarrassing yet memorable basketball appreciation party. Yet, she and Lucas still connected.

Even now, she can't help but think back. How genuine were her original feelings. The idea nags at her. Were Lucas and Brooke physical and nothing els

"Great, you kiss Peyton, again, and I'm pushing you away!"

Peyton hadn't spent the past school year after Lucas. In fact, she had found happiness with Jake of all people. So, why did everything revert? What did Brooke do to Lucas to even make him want to stray?

While away visiting Ellie, Luke didn't call once. Not one time. To Luke, he was catching up with an old friend. To Brooke, he was catching up with Peyton - who happened to be an old friend and some days that was too much for her to handle.

Maybe if Luke had come clean about his kissing Peyton the day of the school shooting things would be different. They were under duress, that was for sure. But Nate and Luke ran into that school for Haley and Peyton while Brooke sat back in the gymnasium worried about everyone she cared about.

It was hard not to feel lonely. To Brooke, Lucas was taking their relationship for granted. Maybe Brooke had as well.

I love you Brooke, I don't know how else to say it.

It wasn't Peyton that complicated the Brooke and Lucas relationship. While naughty letters back and forth both titillated and turned on the elder Scott, it wasn't actually the stuff of great love. He never told himself that. Never out loud and never consciously.

Thinking back, some of the biggest turning points in his life occurred with Brooke. She was there with him the entire night when Peyton had been drugged and almost raped. He forgave her for sleeping with Chris Keller after she handed him a box of 82 letters.

Remembering where the letters had originated helped the idea of sending letters back and forth. But it was kitschy and difficult and Luke couldn't help but forget a letter here or there.

"How about how you show it? I am not pushing you away Lucas, I am holding on for dear life! But I need you to need me back! Why wouldn't you tell me about the kiss and why wouldn't you call me while you were away and why won't you ever just let me all the way in?"

The answer wasn't "Because you aren't Peyton." As much as Brooke expected that to be how she and Lucas went down - it wasn't. He held on. For dear life, even. No, the end all and be all was not Brooke.

But neither Brooke nor Lucas were ready for that reality.

Instead she broke up with him and cut off her friendship with Peyton going so far as to push the two of them together. After all, if Brooke didn't say it out loud -- then she was just fine. Brooke and Lucas were not meant to be. But, Brooke didn't have to acknowledge that.
