If she really didn't know any better--well, for one thing, she'd be a lot stupider than she's ever wanted anyone to see her. Still, she remembers when the internal justifications for her relationships were more 'he's a good man and he does love me' and less 'I still have plausible deniability'. (And she doesn't, anyway.) Simon was nice and good and he drove her crazy sometimes but she never had to think about what she said about him beyond wondering what potshots Jules was politely not taking.

She remembers when anyone who disapproved of her dating a marine had her wholehearted agreement, and the wryly affectionate nobody's perfect. (And he wasn't, and he's still not, and that's a headache of its own that she doesn't have to deal with. More things she forgets she knows.)

Three months ago, she thought when it goes bad and not if.

(Then he told her that he loves her, and she's not sixteen or even twenty-six, but she's human and she loves him. She still promises herself she can balance everything, she can handle it, she's been through so much worse than just bad break ups. Even bad break ups with men who don't use their real names. He isn't her whole life and she'll take care of it, whatever happens; she's always been fine, she's always fine.)

She still doesn't tell anyone what he named the damn cavy.
