The fourteenth is their last morning together in Barcelona; Elizabeth has plans in the evening with Faye and Inspector Abberline (plans that allegedly, she tells Nathan, will involve chocolate cake with cherries and possibly experimenting with cherry stems) and a thousand things will need to be sorted out at the apartment before that (the fifteenth she has set aside almost entirely for relaxation and the inevitable hangover, and the sixteenth is when she picks up the girls, God forbid she expect to get anything done around home with the two of them underfoot after being away for two months). So breakfast happens at around six (she balances on his lap and feigns as though she's going to steal off his plate a few times), and she spends half an hour afterwards trying to find a pair of shoes that the automatae end up pointing out have been exactly where she left them in the first place.
She's convinced she's going to forget something. Everyone always forgets something when they pack. She should've been more packed earlier.
Her head full of plans and dates and distractions that she'd set aside for seven weeks to spend lazing around in the Spanish sun with her chilly companion, Elizabeth organizes her suitcases and pinpoints them back to the apartment, spending a few minutes on the phone with Heidi (baby Arthur's got big while she's been gone) to let her know she's going to be back today, as planned. She kisses Nathan goodbye (a few times--and then remembers she has to leave if she wants to get anything done before she has to put on a pair of heels and remember how to socialize with people that she's not sleeping with), and leaves a note for him in the marked place in the book she knows he's reading.
Somewhere with snow next time?
There'll be drawer-space for you if you want it when I get home.
Love,
Elizabeth
