It's very easy to doubt when you spend half your time disagreeing with what amounts to yourself. Arguments go around in circles because he doesn't exist and it doesn't mean anything more than the knowledge she will always stand slightly apart from normality. She can scream herself hoarse (she has); at the end of the day he will think the same thing because he doesn't think, he's a figment of her imagination that just won't go away.

He is nothing more than something her mind created in weakness. Everything he is, everything he says, must come from her.

(even the men you make up in your fantasy world won't tell you they love you--I'm your friend, Elizabeth, and as a friend I have to tell you that's kind of screwed up)

Luckily, Elizabeth's always been good at ignoring things she doesn't want to deal with.
