Akihiko trusts Mitsuru completely.
That's the short version, and I mean, I could probably give that as an answer and leave it at that, but I'm long-winded, so haha no. Akihiko is ... weird in his relationships. He has some friends, likes people, but never really-- holds people to be important to him except for a select few. His view of the world up until October 4th had been "I must get stronger so I can protect everyone around me," but at the same time, he never really ... thought about anyone around him, to some extent. Like I said, he had friends! And he cares about people in general -- he refused to abandon Fuuka after all. But individuals, it gets ... sketchy. He's less about caring about the individual person and more how he can protect that person, to some extent.
THE POINT IS, Mitsuru breaks through all of that and always has. Akihiko has this thing where he's been cocky and trusts in only his strength and is obsessed with power blahblah. In a nutshell, pre-10/4, Akihiko was pretty damn retarded emotionally. So his bonds with his teammates kind of ... sucked. A lot. For him to trust Mitsuru is a really, really big thing.
I think he recognizes, on some level, that she has her shit together, she's focused, and they have a similar goal of protecting people, taking out Tartarus, etc. She probably earned his respect from the beginning with that, and over the past couple of years, his trust. He's comfortable with her, and is able to be himself. ... If any of that makes sense.
IN CAMP, he knows Mitsuru can take care of herself. He probably keeps an eye on her, but he's fairly certain that she can handle whatever is thrown at her, and do it a lot better than he could. lol topped and all. He'll support her, even if some of the things she does absolutely terrify him (why we need a student council, mitsuru :( ), but unless she actually asks him to, he'll stay to the side and keep out of it, such as with the Ohtori student council. g-go fight win mitsuruuuu don't let akio into your artemisiaaa.
But. Yeah. It really boils down to Akihiko completely trusting Mitsuru, despite the fact that he has issues with genuinely connecting with people. That's just how he rolls.
