The Last Mimzy

I love surprise movies... in both senses of the word actually, and today I was treated to both with The Last Mimzy.  Rachel was nice enough to sneak me into the DGA theaters once again after I pleaded with her for an afternoon distraction that would take me away from a kid’s birthday party on the other side of the world.

One surprise was, it was better than I would have expected for a kid’s movie (always kind of hit or miss).  It was a cute little story and the kids did a good job, especially since they had to carry a lot of the movie on their own.

The other surprise was that it had an “Alice” connection!  Turns out, the “mimzy” came from the Jabberwocky poem from Looking Glass… I should have known that already since I have the bloody beastie tattooed on my arm!  If you’re planning on seeing the movie, then stop reading now… so, the cool thing was that the writers created the idea that the rabbit that the real Alice Liddell owned that was the inspiration for the White Rabbit, was that same kind of rabbit that the kids in the movie were sent from the future. The thing was, Alice didn’t know what to make of it, but the rabbit, who can talk, must have said “mimzy” at some point and Alice would have repeated that to Carroll when he was writing the books. Now that is really damn clever!

Anyway, it’s worth seeing, if not just for a matinee… it was certainly worth more than free, which is what I paid… plus I got the bonus of a “mid-parents in town” visit from Rachel… who gets points for remembering that I liked the Alice books enough that when the poem was being read in the movie, patted my arm... nicely done.

OK, better post this while my internet connection is still working… something has been up with it all weekend and I’m starting to lose patience…
