Literary Fail

These folks publish a quiz each week, different subjects. Unfortunately, the link below leads to the answers as well as the questions, so I've supplied this week's questions. I got 5 ( Read more... )

I might have possibly had a chance at five of the ten. Knowing my memory, 5/5 would have been a stretch. I would like to compose a quiz for more current books. I think there's too much hoopla about these ancient ones.

I scored 8 - 10/10 on the biology, animals, etc. The rock stars, not so much. The sports questions? Didn't even look at it!

Yes, it depends on the subject. And they usually throw in a few easy ones before they hit you with the toughies.

I originally started on LJ from a email list that admires and discusses Bujold's works - most of them would chew up this version of the quiz and look for more. :-)

I managed to get six, although it took me a while to come up with #8. (The others were #s 1, 2, 3, 5, and 6.)

We were similar, but I missed #2, which, considering the number of times it has been mentioned, left me particularly humble. :-}

I got #8, but not because I actually read the book. But I'd seen the name on his book lists and it was odd enough to stick. I think I've only read #1 and #6 completely. Most of #3 and parts of #9. Not enough of the latter to remember any character name except Falstaff.

All right,I admit it, I knew #1 and #6. I read Pride and Prejudice last year and should have known it, but didn't. #3 I might have gotten, but frankly, didn't try.

But ask me a Michael Connelly question!

heh. I don't recall who Michael Connelly is. And I hadn't read some of those that I could answer correctly - have just heard them discussed.

Also, this quiz is UK-based - that sometimes biases the questions a bit. (I never heard of Lively or her book. Since it won the Booker Prize, more fail :-{ )
But it is nice to have quizzes not blatantly USA-centered.

and went to a bookstore today and now know who Michael Connelly is. You can tell what genre I'm weak on at the moment. We read Sanford and Child - I think I should look at Connelly. Just picked up a used Coben after seeing lots of his books in the library where I shelve occasionally and wondering why so many.

This is biased too much in favor of remembering character names instead of the actual books. I was an English major, and while I remembered the plots of most of these books, the character names just didn't stay with me.

The quizzes vary, but they are definitely trivia, not substantial. But I like to get them for the memory exercise. The Free Rice site is probably more meaningful, although vocabulary by itself borders on triva.

1.

My memory for names and my appreciation for the classics are similarly atrophied.

My appreciation of the classics can't atrophy very much. :-) I learned most of them from Classics Comics which were my youth's graphic novels.
