Title: Healing shattered hearts.
Pairing: XanderxKibumxKevin
Genre: Sad-happy?
Rating: G
Wrote this because of
hannahcyanide and her sad fics, lol. Overdose of U-kiss angst. MY version of a happy ending to
heartbreaker and
heartache. (Which are hers, btw.)
“Across the room, someone looked at them and swore his heart was breaking.”
He thinks he’s shying away before any of them get hurt, even though he feels so wrong sitting in Kiseop’s lap and snuggling up to Eli, and it hurts so bad when he looks over and sees Kibum and Xander laughing together.
Kevin doesn’t see the way Xander’s eyes glimmer, or how he looks like his heart is breaking into two. He doesn’t see how Kibum starts to look more pale and drawn these days, worried about Xander and still heartbroken himself. Instead, Kevin sees what he wants to see, or rather, what he thinks he wants to see--- Kibum and Xander. Together.
He had seen the way they smiled when near each other, seen how Xander’s eyes would light up as Kibum slipped an arm casually over his shoulders. Cuddling further into Kiseop’s warm embrace, Kevin wonders why something that looked so perfect could hurt so much.
It’s a Friday when Kevin comes home from his interview at some obscure magazine. He knows that the rest of the U-kiss members should be out somewhere, either shopping or taking part in some variety show or other. So, he gets startled when he hears a muffled squeak as someones breath hitches in their throat.
He peers cautiously into all the rooms before he discovers Xander curled around a pillow, shoulders trembling with every sob that he makes. Kevin doesn’t even realise that he’s moved until he finds himself enveloping Xander in a hug, pushing the bigger but oh-so-much-more-fragile teenager’s head into the crook of his neck.
Xander struggles at first, but soon goes limp in Kevin’s embrace, tears continuing their uninterrupted path down his cheeks. He doesn’t know that it’s Kevin that’s holding him, and Xander never finds out because he falls asleep soon after, curled against the other’s side. When he wakes up, he’s alone in his bed, covered with a blanket, with his tears wiped dry.
Kibum sees all this and more. How Kevin is starting to look at Xander with a certain light in his eyes again, and how the blonde and Xander are suddenly inseperable. He observes as Xander starts to laugh again genuinely (and not the fake one which has been appearing so much since Kevin dumped him). He watches, waits, and he can’t find it in himeself to feel upset, because it’s not right to damage something that looks so beautiful. It’s a razor-tipped butterfly with wings that are tearing Kibum up inside, but he can’t, or rather, won’t do anything about it. He’d rather let himself be ripped to shreds than infringe upon their happiness.
It’s a warm afternoon, just before yet another album photoshoot, that Kibum finds himself walking past Kiseop and Kevin’s dressing room. A snatch of conversation filtering through the chink of the door brings him to a stop.
“Kevin, I know. You love him, right? So go.” Kibum can just imagine the expression on Kiseop’s face. It’s warm, accepting, and at the same time resigned.
“Kiseop--”
“Eli and I agreed. As long as you and everyone else in U-kiss is happy, we’re happy.” Kiseop’s voice is like milk chocolate. Smooth, sweet and assuring. It makes Kibum smile, before he continues on his way, knowing that Kevin isn’t breaking another heart this time as he leaves.
And so, Kevin and Xander grow close again, to the extent where they’re virtually joined at the hip and it seems that it would take a crowbar to pry them apart. They, and everyone else, is so caught up in their happiness that they don’t notice how Kibum is getting paler by the day. He just isn’t that hungry anymore and so his weight starts to plummet so sharply that he might as well have been put on a diet.
He’s so busy worrying about everyone except himself that it should have been no surprise that something will happen. And it does. Right after one of their music bank performances, U-kiss is gathered in a loud rambunctious group, with Kibum hovering at the side, excitedly joining in until he cuts off mid-sentence, sways, and faints.
Except, it is a surprise.
Eli’s the closest to him, and that’s something to be thankful for, because he reacts so quickly that Kibum doesn’t even hit the floor. None of U-kiss knows exactly what to do, because Kibum has always taken care of them when they’re sick and it’s frightening to see their hyung so pale and unresponsive. Thankfully, their manager soon appears and saves the day, sort of.
Everyone crams into the company’s van, Kevin and Xander sporting identical worried looks on their faces. They are the ones who turn around to look at Kibum’s unconscious frame every five seconds, to the point where Eli actually glares at them from where he’s seated, because they’re making everyone in the van feel even more panicked.
After they reach the hospital and Kibum gets admitted, it is a long and agonising wait for all of U-kiss, because the doctor won’t let anyone in yet, and anyway, Kibum’s still unconscious. The manager has to send some of them home, because Soohyun and Dongho has to film a variety show in the morning while Eli and Xander are doing a radio appearance.
Therefore, when Kibum finally wakes up, he comes face to face with Kevin and Xander, and he blinks curiously. Then, he surrenders to their haranguing, smiling softly as they lecture him about taking care of himself. He’ll be released from the hospital soon, Xander informs him, but they’ll have to make sure he regains his weight again.
Finally, when Kibum returns to the U-kiss dorm, he’s still him, but somehow faded. He gazes off occasionally into melancholy silence and finally, Dongho can’t take it anymore. Somehow, he corners both Xander and Kevin and confronts them. That night, when Kibum slid into bed, he found two warm bodies pulling him into a hug. And he realises that something has changed.
A/N: Didn't like the last part much :/ IDK. You know, we have to submit compositions for a 'old teacher' to mark and critique, and apparently, I have poor vocab and cannot utilise tenses well. This is a way of comforting myself that I'm not illiterate, lol.
