Winter is Here. . . .

Dec 07, 2009 08:12

The next few days have a high temp of around 10 degrees F, with windchills down to -15. I guess winter is here!

On the other hand, its been interesting testing out the new house and how it handles chill. It's great compared to old place, I can't believe it.

I used to have to keep my heater going 24/7 to even be bearable and then I would have to wear layers of fleece and sweats with it. I mean it was COLD. Yvonne even made for me a custom handspun/knit alpaca fingerless gloves so I could type on the computer in the wintertime when she found out I was cutting the tips off a dollar store gloves. The alpaca gloves were great, but I haven't really used them here.

Here, I have my ceramic fan heater on a bit, and then have to turn it off or it gets to warm. I toss on slippers and a house jacket and stuff to help keep warm, but its no problem keeping my room at the very comfy 65 degrees. Once I felt particularly chilled, so I let it get up to a decadent 75 degrees as I lay in bed. But usually once it hits 70 its too warm. I haven't hardly worn my fleece winter goods at night or around the house because fleece is too warm!

And in the living room we keep the blinds closed to keep some heat in, and have blankets on the couch that are quite warm. Its chilly, as I have not yet turned on the heat in there, but since I am most usually either walking around and cleaning or doing something, or sitting and watching or reading on the couch, it works fine and doesn't seem needed yet to turn on the electrice heat vents.

Ruth is using the built in heating vents in her room, and I have not heard any complaints from it either.

But heaters aside, the house itself seems pretty darn insulated. My room tends to the colder of the two since I have the larger bedroom on the corner-- I get two edges against the parking lot and cold air. But its still pretty comfy and it heats quickly when I set it on, and doesn't chill down too quickly when I shut it off.

The plug in tall ceramic heater is pretty economical and about the best $50 I ever spent. It has a fan as well to bow the air into the room and occilates as well. It even has a remote so I can keep it cool at night and heat the room some in morning before I get out of the covers. The only thing is the automatic temp guage seems to be five degrees off. I set the temp to the level above where I want it, and it holds pretty steady, turning of and off as needed.

Even the bathroom has not only a vent for steam, but also a heat lamp! No sudden terrible shocks of temperature. I just turn on the heat lamp and up the heater, take my shower, and when I'm done turn them off and it all goes great with no unhealthy extremes and chills.

This house is sooo much healthier.
