Yes, folks, I gave in to the foul temptation of the modern darkside.....what is this, you may ask? Bikini mud wrestling? The illegal gerbil dancers? THinking wihtout a permit?
No, its more insidious than those.... its.....
WARCRAFT!
Yes, the boredom of being sick and homebound and alone for the holidays, and the efforts of two good friends who now live out of town talked me into giving the 10 day trial a looksee. It was fun!
I made a Troll Hunter and we did an hours worth of joint quest work, and the teamwork was really fun. Its a huge rich world to play in, though it is mainly hack and slash the personal interaction and rich economy and character skill personalization look intriquing, not to mention the huge size of the roamable world. And a full membership would allow things like voice chat, so I could talk for free with my friend with my headset.
So I got the disk at the local store. At 20 bucks, it was not that bad a price, and it came with a month free, so the game was like just 5 bucks. But I didn't realize the disk was so out of date....it took 12 hours for gigs of updates to be downloaded, one after another. I guess that's not bad, really, that they maintain it so well, but it was a bit of a surprise! But anyhow, it updated to the Lich King expansion on its own and it ran fine after that, so no complaints really.
I play about 2 or 3 hours a day, and its really engaging. My friends are fun to play with, and they helped me learn the game and get my character set up to a high enough level (11) that I have learned how to solo pretty well too, so I enjoy my alone time roaming and exploring as much as my joint time with my buddies. I got a pet bear now for my hunter, a fun trip to another territory and graphics wonderland, and I named it PawPaw. PaPa would be too much of a give away, I like my puns to have a bit of work to them.
Once my RL friends come back to town, and I am feeling well enough to get out of the house, I don't think I will have a problem choosing to leave the computer for real socializing. Fun as it is, I don't understand how people could get drawn into it instead of real life, but when you have no place to be and some down time at home, it is an amazing way to spend some time! And there is a lot more strategy to the characters and interaction than I first imagined.
So folks, if you are on the Bladefist! server, give me an email and maybe we can meet up sometime :)
warcraft,
