I am also failing at keeping up with LJ -- I've been meaning to congratulate you on getting your licence for, well, I guess a month and a half(ish), but have thus far been full of fail.

Thank you! :D I've been similarly meaning to say that your job sounds insane and kind of fascinating when you're not hearing about horrible stuff.

The horrible stuff is actually the most fascinating stuff, unfortunately. To the point where I'll actually pick the rapes and murders and things out of the box, instead of just taking whatever's at the front.

(Also, rapists and murderers tend to be better-spoken than people on assault, robbery, and drugs charges, which makes the transcipts easier to type, which boosts my word rate, which boosts my pay. Possibly this is an even worse reason to pick them out.)

On the upside, at least it makes me feel like I'm contributing towards putting some godawful people away, even if it's only in a very small way. It brings out the vindictive part of me, I must admit.

That is an interesting and sort of sad observation.

Yeah, I've learnt a lot about various crime demographics. :/ (Not that all sex offenders are necessarily upper-class, though -- they're also just a lot less likely to come in drunk and full of testosterone than the others. XD There's a lot of sex crimes and murders in remote areas, which I guess isn't really a surprise.)

I can tell you right now, though, that if I saw a cover sheet with an 'old'-sounding men's name and a birthdate before 1955, I would bet my next week's pay on it being a sex crime from decades back. I think every single one of these I've seen has fallen into this category. It's sad.
