Instructions: List 10 musical artists (or bands) you like, in no specific order (do this before reading the questions below). Really, don’t read the questions below until you pick your ten artists!!!

1. George Formby
2. Run DMC
3. Stew
4. Kirsty MacColl
5. Robert Johnson
6. Phil Ochs
7. Buck Owens
8. Tarkio
9. The Loud Family
10. Kara's Flowers

What was the first song you ever heard by 6?
"What's That I Hear?" Prior to that I had heard covers of his songs, such as They Might Be Giants' version of "One More Parade", which is what prompted me to seek him out.

What is your favorite song of 8?
"Neapolitan Bridesmaid"

What kind of impact has 1 left on your life?
It's hard to calculate the impact of George Formby on my life, since he sort of encompasses everything I love about music, movies, comedy, Englishness, etc. GF was probably the most famous ukulele player of all time and I play in a ukulele-based band so his influence looms large, and not just for his playing style (we have one song on our new album that is a direct lift) but for how he brought the English Music Hall tradition into the age of recording & radio and inspired the Kinks & The Beatles, which in turn led to XTC & Robyn Hitchcock & then to John Wesley Harding & Anton Barbeau. So to recap - HUGE impact.

What is your favorite lyric of 5?
"I woke up this mornin' and all my shrimps was dead and gone."

How many times have you seen 4 live?
Zero.

What is your favorite song by 7?
"Streets Of Bakersfield"

Is there any song by 3 that makes you sad?
Several, in fact: "Bleed", "Come Down Now", "Club Girl Terrain" to name a few.

What is your favorite song by 9?
"Total Mass Destruction"

When did you first get into 2?
Freshman year of high school - I was obsessed with breakdancing and what was then not yet referred to as "old school rap". I bought a compilation tape at Meijer's called "Electric Breakdance"; it featured Run-DMC's song "It's Like That". I loved it so much that I immediately got their debut album (on cassette of course, as was the custom in those days) and counted down the days until their new album "King Of Rock" would be released, not to mention their impending semi-biographical movie "Krush Groove" which was the best movie I had ever seen in my life AND STILL IS.

How did you get into 3?
Didn't you already ask me a question about 3? I think I first heard Stew on a compilation from Not Lame or the Audities list or something. It was the mid-to-late 90s and I was completely into that scene. Most of the bands that were such a big deal to us back then never really went on to any mainstream success, but Stew transcended all of that and he's now a Tony award winner and star of a major motion picture directed by Spike Lee, so good for him.

What is your favorite song by 4?
"Soho Square"

How many times have you seen 9 live?
I'd say not less than 5, not more than 10. It's a little hazy at this point.

What is a good memory concerning 2?
I don't know of a specific memory but Run-DMC always evokes the summer of 1986, driving around Ionia with Jon Gordon and Jeff Dolphin and generally not having a care in the world. Not many small town white guys were into Run-DMC yet, so we thought we were really cutting edge.

Is there a song by 8 that makes you sad?
"Following Camden Down" does kind of, but in more of a wistful way.

What is your favorite song of 1?
Do I have to pick just one? I suppose I'll go with "Noughts And Crosses".

How did you become a fan of 10?
I saw their video on MTV (yeah, I know, boring story, but wait..) and a few months later my band Bigwheel was invited to play at the first ever International Pop Overthrow in Los Angeles on the same bill with...Kara's Flowers. They were another of the few IPO bands that went on to huge mainstream success but only after recalculating their entire sound and changing their name to Maroon 5.
