Hi fellow Cain fans! I've just finished the entire Earl Cain (I prefer to call it "Earl Cain" rather than "Count Cain" just because he's not called a count at all in the series and I'm weird when it comes to names and titles of people >.<)
Anyway, I love this series; it has become my favourite manga of all time (just barely surpassing Angel Sanctuary) though I must admit that I wasn't sure when I picked up the first volume of The Cain Saga. Godchild is much better, both art and storywise, but I love the whole series. The only thing that bothered me was the plot hole (when did Riff's little sister become a younger brother named Clyde?!) and the fact that we never find out what Cain's middle name is! What does the C. stand for? Is it actually in there somewhere and I just read right over it?
I love the way Kaori Yuki remained true to history with the celebration in the final book (and by my calculations and research, Godchild occured in the year 1897 and therefore, Cain was born in 1880) and other things like that. There were even times when I was sitting in History class and my teacher would say something that made me think of it, like when he said the butler would iron the newspaper, I instantly imagined Riff doing that. But the freakiest thing was when he told us about the Hamilton archives. Apparently, in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, there was a man named Doctor Thomas Hamilton who began holding seances after his son died, and his office was located on Disraeli street. Maybe it's a bit of a stretch, but I instantly thought "doctor" "Disraeli" "seances" = "Godchild". I wonder if it's just a freaky coincidence or if Kaori Yuki knew about it?
The best thing about the series was that all the characters were so lovable. There aren't many who weren't my favourite! But, to narrow it down, in the end, my list came to:
1. Alexis Hargreaves
2. Riffael "Riff" Raffit
3. Doctor Jizabel Disraeli
4. Earl Cain C. Hargreaves
5. Dominic Crehador
- In "Forgotten Juliet" when Cain tricked Orlando into thinking he'd poisoned him but it was only black ink.
- In "Kafka" when Jizabel walks in on "Justine" biting Riff's neck (I like all of Cain's crossdressing moments!)
- In "Seal of the Red Ram" when Riff finds Oscar's locket and sees the picture inside, discovering that his fiancee looked like Cain, not Mary Weather: "I didn't see anything. I am just the butler here. I did not see this photo."
- In "Mortician's Daughter" when Cain tells Oscar he hopes the coffin is extra large so his feet don't stick out (poor Oscar)
- The whole "The Stake" episode because of it's irony
- In "Castrato" when Cain gives Oscar a list of conditions when it comes to watching Mary Weather: "You are forbidden to touch Mary's clothes, body or hair. You are forbidden to utter any comments that would be seen as an untoward advance toward my sister. Furthermore, you are forbidden to smell her scent, steal her things or have improper thoughts about her. You are also forbidden to enter her room. If you have no choice but to touch Mary, you are required to wear gloves."
- Still in "Castrato" when Oscar saves Mary and she finds he's bleeding (Aww!)
- Riffael's first appearance in "Judas Kiss" (it made me cry)
- In "Oedipus Blade" when Riffael sees the burning mansion (that page was so beautiful for some reason)
- In "Godless" when Madame Octavia "saw through Cain's disguise" (what kind of disguise was that?! He was wearing a pair of glasses!)
- Still in "Godless" when Jizabel died
- All Cain x Riff moments
- The ending (I was crying again by that point)
All in all, I look forward to seeing what's happening at this community. I hope to post some fan fiction, and I'd love to discuss things with other people, just because I have no friends who actually know anything about the manga I read >.< LOL
