Pew Poll talks a fair bit about public anti-intellectualism in not so many words, but reveals something of a chicken-and-egg question: the question not asked is, do those "leaning" Democrats really feel particularly attracted to big-D Democracy, or are they moderate conservatives who don't want to be apologists for a party which is often militantly anti-intellectual? Corollary to this question is, did the remarkably low number of scientists who identify as Republicans (6% compared to the general public, which is about 24% Republican) lead or lag the anti-intellectual populism currently embraced by party-line rhetoric?
This is fascinating in a jocks v. nerds sort of way, at least from the standpoint of a nerd. I'm sure jocks have other things to worry about, like who's leading the National League Central and when's lunch?
