Shiny new thing

My reaction to the overabundance of overtime and fatigue was, apparently, to spend way too much money. I bought a Kindle.

Seems to be a device that inspires mixed reactions. A lot of the negative ones seem to be based on people preferring the aesthetics of physical books, or the misperception that it has an LCD screen and accompanying glare/eye stress problems (it doesn't... I'm very interested to see how the electronic paper is, it sounds nifty).

As far as that first bit - well, I like physical books, too. Obviously. I have quite a few. But there are some instances when I'd really like the qualities of the Kindle. Like when I don't want to lug multiple books. Or want to bring a book with me to work/coffee house/pub/lake house/wherever, and don't quite know what I'm in the mood for yet. I might get newspaper/magazine subscriptions, too. Evidently it can play .mp3 files, and store pictures, documents, etc. I might finally enter the world of audio-books. And always having access to Wikipedia is bound to make me even more annoying that I already am. :)

I personally think comparing it to a physical library is kind of apples-to-oranges. Or maybe I'm not much of a purist. (Well, I know that's true... about most things. I'm a kilt-purist.)

Anyhoo... naysayers be damned, I'm kinda stoked! I've started checking out what authors have works on there, and there've only been a few of my favorites that aren't available (Paul Bowles, Daphne du Maurier, where are you?). And most are well under $10. The only $10 book on my list so far is Stephen Colbert's.
