Something like that. The ones that move are called Cactuars where I'm from. [Though they do have plain old cacti, too.]

Are they tough? Beyond being fast?

A lot of the time, yeah. They're really hard to hit, and they've got this attack that they use to pump you full of needles. I've never seen anyone avoid it, either.

Then, how do you avoid such a thing?

Pretty much. The scientists call it One Thousand Needles, and they all get launched at whoever's attacking the Cactuar, so...[Yeah.]

Uh...you can't. You just have to take it and hope you've got a way to heal yourself when it's over. [Sheepish tone is sheepish.]

Yeah. Cure spells or potions--[Zack stops, pausing for a moment before he speaks again.]

I'm gonna guess your world doesn't have that kind of stuff.

Huh. Wasn't expecting to hear something like that... [That's a first for him. What kind of world doesn't have a way for people to patch themselves up? Do they just not hurt or something?]

Yeah, if you got lucky and they didn't hit anything important. Really painful to get 'em out of you, though.

Really? Well, I've never heard anything like potions... save from storybooks.

This is probably gonna sound really random, but...are magic and summons also in those storybooks? [...no, Zack, that doesn't sound random at all. Seriously...]

Trust me, you don't want to. We've had to knock a few guys out after they run into a Cactuar so we can heal them without hurting someone else.

... well, yes, yes they are. The only real magic is -- [FFFFFFFFFF IMMORTALITY AND GEASS. Let's not talk about that.] science.

Well, at least, there aren't such creatures here.

But science is science. It's pretty much the exact opposite of magic, isn't it?

Good thing, too. [Nervous little laugh.] They really like the desert. Running into 'em out there would have been bad in this place.

Yes, it would be ... so what is out in the desert? Have you been there?

Then why call it magic if it's not at all like spells or stuff like that?

[Zack chuckles a bit.] Nothing out there but sand, crabs, and sharks. The sand likes to trip you and the rest wants to eat you. It's not worth the trouble going out there.
