Spent my anniversary hiking up at Waskesiu. I was breaking in my new boots. They need some work, yet. We saw a Great Blue Heron, three beavers - they were unusually active and approachable, various waterfowl and sundry elk and deer. The hiking trail we went on is in the middle of wolf territory, and there was a lot of fresh scat - not just wolf, but bear. It goes without saying that there were a great deal of tracks and prints on the trail. We didn't catch sight of either, sadly. As you can imagine, Scott is rather relieved about that. I also purchased a new
hiking backpack, intended for doing the
West Coast Trail, which probably won't happen this year, but definitely will next year. Although I'm certainly going to be doing a lot of hiking in the interim!! I also finally purchased a BPA-free Nalgene. Probably should have done that one years ago. Oops.
I am going to roller derby tonight with my brother. I so need to join!! In the past year, the
Saskatoon Roller Derby League has gone from having one team to having three, plus an away team. I wish I could have joined in the past year, but I've been rather busy. I've been doing school full time, plus working 30 hours a week. It's been pretty stressful, and I basically had no social life. I'm definitely not doing that again. If anyone's thinking of doing this, I recommend no more than three classes and a job that's actually willing to give you time off. You know, instead of one that promises you time off and then doesn't deliver unless you threaten to quit, because you are in the middle of finals. Also, don't become assistant manager.
I am really looking forward to not being so busy, and I've been taking advantage of this for the past while. I've been spending my days off... by keeping very busy. But with things that are actually enjoyable!! Seriously, though, after the past year, if I have more than one day off where I just sit around I go kind of nuts and need to Do Something. So far I've been hiking at Waskesiu, been to an AWESOME
Pixies concert, toured the
Saskatchewan Legislative Buildings, geeked out over the Corner Gas set at
Rouleau, SK, and found this unbelievably fantastic vegetarian restaurant in Regina -
The 13th Avenue Coffee House. I've also been doing things closer to home that I haven't had time for, small things like visiting the
Saskatoon Farmer's Market - one of my favourite things about Saskatoon, transplanting my houseplants, which were getting waaaaaaaay too big, getting some basic appointments and shopping done that I haven't had time for - things like new jeans, contact lenses, doctor appointments, and, as mentioned, hiking/camping supplies. So basically, I'm still doing a lot of stuff, it's just stuff I want to do.
Soooooooo, in case anyone couldn't tell,
eibborn has got me into
Homestuck. This is now the dorkiest thing about me, although the (enormous) fandom is much dorkier than I can hope to compare to. I ordered a bunch of t-shirts online, some Homestuck themed and some from
beatonna. Because
Hark! A Vagrant is cool. But my favourite shirt I ordered is my
Bibliophibian shirt. I like it a lot.
I will write more later, but for now, I must depart. Roller derby, ho!!
