Body and Appearance
1. Describe the character's height and build. Is he heavyset, thin, short, rangy?
Andrew is 5’6” tall with a semi-lean build. He isn’t very fit, but he isn’t heavy, either. Due to lack of exercise and years of junk food, he’s basically got a medium-to-thin body with a slightly pudgy belly and no muscle.
2. How old is he?
21 years young, physically. Mentally, Andrew is comparable with a 14 year old.
3. Describe his posture. Does he carry himself well or does he slouch?
He has a very small slouch, but his posture is improving. Other than that, he carries himself quite well.
4. How is his health? Is he fit or out of shape? Any illnesses or conditions? Any physical disabilities?
Andrew is extremely average in his fitness. He’s not strong, but he could easily run away from a fight. He’s prone to minor infections and allergic reactions and has a very, very low tolerance for alcohol.
5. How does he move? Is he clumsy, graceful, tense, fluid?
Not the clumsiest, but Andrew isn’t a swan, either. He rarely trips over anything, let alone his own feet, but he couldn’t be a dancer if he wanted to. He’s simply not graceful enough. He is rather relaxed in his movement, however.
6. How attractive is this character physically? How does he perceive himself in the mirror?
Personally, Andrew finds himself to be rather handsome in a modest-yet-dashing way. In reality, Andrew has a somewhat awkward attractiveness to him. His features aren’t dashing or handsome, but he has a wide-eyed and childlike look to him that makes him more “cute” than “handsome.” In the future, he’ll put more care into looking more like a man than a teenager and it’ll pay off.
7. Describe his complexion. Dark, light, clear, scarred?
Years of being a reclusive nerd have turned Andrew’s skin pale. Interestingly, however, he has a very clear complexion free of blemishes of any kind.
8. Describe his hair: color, texture, style.
Andrew’s hair is dirty blonde and short. It would be rather soft, considering he conditions regularly, but he also gels it to style it, so it rarely has the soft and fluffy quality that naturally comes to it.
9. What color are his eyes?
Greyish blue.
10. Does the character have any other noteworthy features?
Not particularly. No one would look twice at him on the street.
11. What are his chief tension centers?
If this is what I apparently think it is, where he feels the most tension, then the back of his neck.
12. What is the character's wardrobe like? Casual, dressy, utilitarian? Bright colors, pastels, neutrals? Is it varied, or does he have six of the same suit?
Very loose, laid back clothes. A lot of t-shirts and jeans. More often than not, Andrew will wear a comfy pair of jeans with a t-shirt and a button-up shirt or light jacket. He much prefers comfort over style, though this doesn’t mean he isn’t stylish. He knows his basic fashion rules and doesn’t break them. He’s fond of warm colors as they go well with his skin tone and hair. There was a period of time where all he wore was black, but now that he’s not even the least bit evil, that style is way out the window.
13. Do his clothes fit well? Does he seem comfortable in them?
Like I said, they’re comfy. Nothing too tight and nothing baggy.
14. Does he dress the same on the job as he does in his free time? If not, what are the differences?
His job and free time are the same thing. He’s a friend of the Slayer. He gets no choice in work attire, really. It’s one of those ‘on-call’ jobs.
15. You knew it was coming: Boxers, briefs or commando?
Boxers, broskie, all the way.
Speech
1. What does this character's voice sound like? High-pitched, deep, hoarse?
Not necessarily high-pitched, but higher than most men’s voices. Andrew is a tenor, for those musically-inclined folks. Though his voice can come off as ever-so-slightly nasal at times.
2. How does he normally speak? Loud, soft, fast, evenly? Does he talk easily, or does he hesitate?
All of the above. On a normal basis, in a regular conversation, Andrew speaks a lot and fast. There’s a few catches on words where he has to stop and think for a second or has a nervous moment, but his speech is generally even.
3. Does the character have a distinct accent or dialect? Any individual quirks of pronunciation? Any, like, you know, verbal tics?
If it falls in this category, he stutters a little when he’s nervous or starts saying one word and suddenly chooses another or a different phrasing. It’s very difficult to explain, actually…
4. What language/s does he speak, and with how much fluency?
English, for the most part. He isn’t fluent in any of them, but he can read and speak various demon languages.
5. Does he switch languages or dialects in certain situations?
Uh, when having to deal directly with demon summoning, yes.
6. Is he a good impromptu speaker, or does he have to think about his words?
If he doesn’t think about his words, the wrong ones come out. Without fail.
7. Is he eloquent or inarticulate? Under what circumstances might this change?
He pretty much just says the first thing that comes to mind. At times, this might be a string of long and complicated words, but more often than not, it’s the simplest phrasing of something obvious.
Mental and Emotional
1. How intelligent is this character? Is he book-smart or street-smart?
This probably doesn’t fall into either category, but he’s pop culture smart. He’s also very book-smart, but most of his knowledge lies in TV shows, movies, and books, generally of the sci-fi/fantasy genre. His book smarts are limited, however. He’s no genius like Warren, but he does have a high capacity and memory for understanding complicated subjects.
2. Does he think on his feet, or does he need time to deliberate?
Both? He can think on his feet, but the situation might not end well. In fact, the situation might not end well even if he deliberates. Even when Andrew plans things out, his ideas aren’t the best.
3. Describe the character's thought process. Is he more logical, or more intuitive? Idealistic or practical?
It’s a big, long, twisty train carting circus animals from one side of the country to the other. It can be logical, but mostly one thought leads to another to another to another and Andrew can’t help getting off track. If he’s in a very, very serious situation, however, he can do a pretty good job of staying serious and realistic. And he’s much more idealistic than practical. In fact, there is very little practicality about Andrew.
4. What kind of education has the character had?
All the way through high school, after which he likely could have attended college, but for unknown reasons did not.
5. What are his areas of expertise? What, if anything, is he interested in learning more about?
On the expertise front, Andrew knows demons. Presumably self-taught, he knows just about all there is on demon basics and then a little more about specific breeds of demons, including languages and summoning techniques.
6. Is he an introvert or an extrovert?
Both. He’s more of an introvert who pretends to be an extrovert. He’s very friendly and outreaching, but he also keeps a great deal to himself, mostly deep emotions like love or grief. He doesn’t share a whole lot of truth about himself with others.
7. Describe the character's temperament. Is he even-tempered or does he have mood swings? Cheerful or melancholy? Laid-back or driven?
He’s very cheerful, even towards things that should make him upset. For example, he talks about people who have died as though they’re still alive; their deaths don’t seem to affect him much. He’s pretty evenly cheerful. One of the few things that really bring him down is any kind of harsh suggestion about his character that might be true in the worse ways; eg. calling him out on lying, suggesting he’s gay, pointing out that he bottles things up.
8. How does he respond to new people or situations? Is he suspicious, relaxed, timid, enthusiastic?
Rather enthusiastic, unless it looks like the new people or situation might be a threat to his well-being.
9. Is he more likely to act, or to react?
React.
10. Which is his default: fight or flight?
Flight. Definitely. Entirely. This is if he has a choice, of course.
11. Describe the character's sense of humor. Does he appreciate jokes? Puns? Gallows humor? Bathroom humor? Pranks?
Andrew appreciates all humor that doesn’t go over his head. His own humor is mostly sci-fi or pop culture related.
12. Does the character have any diagnosable mental disorders? If yes, how does he deal with them?
He is a chronic liar. Andrew lies in order to distance himself from reality. Instead of dealing with problems he’s faced with in life, he tells stories to cushion his fall. Sometimes he’s able to trick himself this way, either into believing something is/isn’t true that is happening or into believing that something happened a different way than it actually did. It helps when he can convince others of this, too.
13. What moments in this character's life have defined him as a person?
Oh, goodness. His whole childhood; his teaming up with Jonathan and Warren to become a super villain; killing (or rather Warren killing) Katrina; Warren’s death; killing Jonathan; confessing the truth surrounding Jonathan’s death; befriending the Scoobies; the big battle. That’s all up to his current canon point. After that, we can include his Watcher training; Buffy telling him he’s part of the family; Warren’s return.
14. What does he fear?
Total rejection. Being all alone.
15. What are his hopes or aspirations?
He really, really wants to be a Scooby. He wants the gang to accept him and he wants to be a hero, like them. Similarly, he wants to be strong.
16. What is something he doesn't want anyone to find out about him?
He doesn’t want people to know that he still misses and loves Warren and that if he were to come back, Andrew would still be loyal to him. Also, if he knew, he probably wouldn’t want people knowing he’s gay. That is, of course, if it weren’t a secret to him, as well.
Relationships
1. Describe this character's relationship with his parents.
What parents? A little canon, a little fanon, but Andrew’s parents weren’t much of parents. At least by the time he finished high school, Andrew’s legal guardian was his aunt, who also didn’t do much parenting. She didn’t even care enough to bail him out of jail. There was no one around to ever actually raise Andrew, which is why he’s still so much a child.
2. Does the character have any siblings? What is/was their relationship like?
Andrew has one older brother, a year older than him, named Tucker. Like Andrew, Tucker was interested in demonology. Unlike Andrew, Tucker was mentally unstable and sent hellhounds to his senior prom to slaughter everyone there because he couldn’t get a date. Although Andrew doesn’t like being identified as “Tucker’s brother” as he so often is, he still loves his brother and gives him kudos for inspiring him to summon demons. In my touch of fanon, Tucker is in a mental institute in Los Angeles.
3. Are there other blood relatives to whom he is close? Are there ones he can’t stand?
No others. Just the aunt who doesn’t care about him.
4. Are there other, unrelated people whom he considers part of his family? What are his relationships with them?
For a long time, his family was Warren and Jonathan. They were his best and only friends and the only people who cared about him. Warren took advantage of Andrew’s love for him and managed to force Andrew to obey his every command. Years later, past his canon point, Andrew’s family is the Scooby gang. They love and accept him like he’s always wanted, no matter how he’s screwed up in the past or how he keeps screwing up.
5. Who is/was the character's best friend? How did they meet?
Warren Mears. It’s unclear how they initially met, but Warren attended Sunnydale High for his senior year of high school. He either met Andrew there or he met Tucker, but either way, this was Andrew’s first connection to Warren. A few years later, Warren pitched the idea that they should become super villains and Andrew readily agreed. Warren, however, had some deep-set mental issues and was much more interested in using Andrew as a tool than being his friend. He used and abused Andrew’s trust until Andrew was ready to do anything for Warren. Even a few years after Warren’s death, when he returns, skinless, Andrew sacrifices himself to save his ex-best friend.
6. Does he have other close friends?
Jonathan Levinson was Andrew’s only real friend for a very long time. He was honest towards Andrew and treated him like a person. Unfortunately, Andrew was manipulated into stabbing Jonathan to death. Later, he found a good friend in Anya Jenkins. She was also very honest with him and he admired her greatly. Anya was also killed, but in battle. A lot of people Andrew is fond of die. Other friends include Buffy Summers, Xander Harris, Dawn Summers, and Willow Rosenberg.
7. Does he make friends easily, or does he have trouble getting along with people?
If it were up to Andrew, he’d easily make friends. However, most folks just find him annoying and would rather not bother with him.
8. Which does he consider more important: family or friends?
Friends, considering his friends are his family.
9. Is the character single, married, divorced, widowed? Has he been married more than once?
Very single. His whole life, in fact. He’s never even had a kiss.
10. Is he currently in a romantic relationship with someone other than a spouse?
I think I covered this.
11. Who was his first crush? Who is his latest?
His first crush was on Deanna Troi or Dana Scully, but considering neither of those ladies are real people, his first real-life crush would have been on Warren, though he didn’t really realize that’s what it was. That was also the latest.
12. What does he look for in a romantic partner?
He doesn’t. Andrew has basically no romantic notions. He isn’t emotionally mature enough just yet to be able to focus on romantic relationships. He can “lust” after women only because society has shown him how. But this is greatly faking.
13. Does the character have children? Grandchildren? If yes, how does he relate to them? If no, does he want any?
He has no kids and probably never will, but he enjoys the company of children and doesn’t mind being around them.
14. Does he have any rivals or enemies?
Buffy used to be his arch nemesis…es…is… But now he just helps to fight the forces of darkness.
15. What is the character's sexual orientation? Where does he fall on the
Kinsey scale?
This is more than complicated. If Andrew were to ever realize that he’s gay, on the Kinsey scale, he’d fall at a 4 or 5. As for what he believes he is, he’s certain he’s a 0, but really he’s kind of a 1. He often slips and mentions a man he finds attractive (always an actor or character).
16. How does he feel about sex? How important is it to him?
It’s very awkward and he doesn’t want to talk about it. He’s a virgin and, as I’ve mentioned, has never even had a kiss. Talking about getting any kind of physical with another person just makes him uncomfortable. He isn’t sure how he feels about any of it.
17. What are his turn-ons? Turn-offs? Weird bedroom habits?
Turn-ons include extensive knowledge of Star Trek, Star Wars, Battlestar Gallactica, Caprica, The X-Files, etc. I’m sure you see a pattern. Also, intelligence. Turn-offs would be stupidity or ignorance.
Beliefs
1. Do you know your character's astrological (
zodiac of
choice) sign? How well does he fit type?
Andrew’s birth date is never provided in canon.
2. Is this character religious, spiritual, both, or neither? How important are these elements in his life?
He used to be religious. Andrew was raised Catholic and apparently just followed the rules, not because he wanted to, but because he had to. Since his childhood, religion has become less important than vampires, demons, and robots.
3. Does this character have a personal code of morals or ethics? If so, how did that begin? What would it take to compromise it?
He… really doesn’t. Have morals and ethics. Aside from the generally accepted rights and wrongs. And even those are easily manipulated.
4. How does he regard beliefs that differ from his? Is he tolerant, intolerant, curious, indifferent?
He’s somewhere between tolerant and indifferent. He’s rather apathetic about people’s beliefs, including his own.
5. What prejudices does he hold? Are they irrational or does he have a good reason for them?
He doesn’t like vampires all that much. One bit him once. And they’re bloodsucking, soulless fiends that kill people. Does that count as a prejudice?
Daily Life
1. What is the character's financial situation? Is he rich, poor, comfortable, in debt?
He is… broke. Evenly broke. When he lived with Warren and Jonathan, they regularly stole money and valuables, but after that fell through, he went broke. Now he lives with Buffy, though and that crew pretty much takes care of him.
2. What is his social status? Has this changed over time, and if so, how has the change affected him?
No, he’s still pretty much an average loser. He’s mostly looked down on and regarded as a harmless, worthless person without much to offer. He’s altogether viewed as average.
3. Where does he live? House, apartment, trailer? Is his home his castle or just a place to crash? What condition is it in? Does he share it with others?
At the moment, he lives in the Summers household with lots and lots of others. Mostly a bunch of teenage girls. Which may sound weird, but its not. He loves his new home and the people he shares it with and he is very grateful for it.
4. Besides the basic necessities, what does he spend his money on?
He has no money. But when he did, video games, comic books, movies, action figures, toys.
5. What does he do for a living? Is he good at it? Does he enjoy it, or would he rather be doing something else?
Nothing. Andrew is jobless. He used to be a super villain and, no, he wasn’t very good at it, despite what he’d like people to believe. Later on, he becomes a Watcher and that’s something he is good at.
6. What are his interests or hobbies? How does he spend his free time?
He loves video games, comic books, and TV.
7. What are his eating habits? Does he skip meals, eat out, drink alcohol, avoid certain foods?
He eats whatever he can, mostly junk food and easy meals. Anything that can be microwaved is good. He rarely drinks.
