Craziness. This residency is starting to get super hectic... I've been trying to get this entry out off and on for the last couple of weeks x_x
So on Wednesday 9/17 I was already mentally halfway to Georgia lol, gave my key to Jaime so she could come by and take care of the cat, and cleaned up the house and put stuff away so the cat couldn't puke on it. And then Albert and I sort of packed while we had Fellowship of the Ring on, because it was something we'd seen before and I could safely ignore... but then Albert didn't get around to packing till after the movie was over lol.
9/18 Thursday morning we stopped by the Men's Wearhouse to pick up Albert's proper suit - we checked the stuff he ordered on Tuesday afternoon and it was all waaaaaaaay too big lol, they'd measured him and then ordered in "one size fits all"... well, "one size fits all Americans". Which is a problem when you're a tiny Asian boy. The shirt sleeves were super baggy, the crotch of his pants was halfway down to his knees, everything was kind of hilarious. So we re-ordered some other stuff in more appropriate sizes and luckily when he tried them on Thursday morning they fit well. So we grabbed that, got Wendy's on the way to the airport, and then flew to Atlanta and then to Savannah. Rented a car in Savannah and drove down to Fripp Island yay :D It's only like 70 miles, but 40 miles of it was on highway and took like 30 minutes, and then the last 30 miles was all windy coastal/islandy roads and took an hour =_=;;
Got to Fripp Island around 10 PM, got to Caitlin's family's house, and met a bajillion relatives which I still have trouble keeping straight lol. Albert and I stayed in one of the basement rooms for the night because the other "friends of the bride and groom" party house wasn't going to be available till Friday afternoon. In the meanwhile we hot-tubbed with Josh and Caitlin in the house's backyard - or at least, tried to, but the hot tub was set too hot and there was no way to cool it down other than letting it naturally lose heat into the environment. So Albert and I splashed around happily in the pool while Josh and Caitlin dabbled their feet, and Caitlin's... brother or cousin I think? and his girlfriend hung around with us. And the dogs were out too, lol, first thing I did when I got into the house was play with the dogs...
So then Friday morning (9/19) Albert and I went to get haircuts in nearby Beauford (because all the haircut places around KSU have super mixed or super negative reviews, we'll have to figure out safe options in the future...) and then we went back to Fripp Island to pick up Josh, Caitlin, and Brian B (aka BB, as opposed to Brian S who was arriving later lol) to take them to run errands, because I'd paid for the semi-scam of "return the rental car at whatever gas level and we'll fill it up for such-and-such amount of money upfront" and so we were trying to use up the gas lol. But then it turned out that they needed to pick up their marriage license in Beauford at 2:34 pm (no earlier, because bureaucracy) *and* had to go to Savannah to pick up Josh's rental pants, and these two things could not be completed in sequence while still allowing us all to get to the wedding rehearsal dinner at 5 pm. So the guys dropped me and Caitlin off near the courthouse, and they took the car to Savannah to get Josh's pants. So Caitlin and I walked to a nearby restaurant with really really good waffle fries ("crack fries" as Josh+Caitlin called them) and hung out there and chatted and Caitlin vented a bit of her stress (paraphrased - "Now I understand why Bridezillas exist - because everyone and everything is specifically fucking with the bride!") and later I texted Albert being like "I think our official titles should be 'keeper of Josh and Caitlin's sanity' lol"... and Caitlin and I also talked about our very different experiences in growing up on the Internets. Apparently all my American friends who also grew-up-on-the-Internets invented elaborate fake personas o_o;; I was pretty much always myself wherever I went...
Anyway, so finally we picked up the documents needed, or rather Caitlin went in and got them while I stood outside holding her phone because cellphones weren't allowed inside the courthouse o_o;; And then we looked the documents over while we waited for her dad to come and pick us up - there was three copies, one for the bride and groom and two for the courthouse, for some reason. Bureaucracy, man. But it was all very official-bureaucratic-form-looking and had the notary's seal on it and also a section for whether this was their first/second/third/etc marriage for some reason... but yeah, so Caitlin's dad took us back to the Brett family house, where Erica (of Boston Kevin-and-Erica) and Raph (another Bostonite) were there, bridesmaid and groomsman respectively. Kevin, Erica, and Raph had apparently driven all the way down from Boston in, like, 18 hours o_o;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;; holy shit. They took turns, but Kevin did most of the driving (later he commented "I found out my limit is 10 hours of straight driving!") through the night, and so he was in the party house recuperating. Erica and I wandered around and chatted and ended up on the dock behind the Brett house, which is why eventually we wandered back and found everyone gone. We'd been left behind T_T So after a bunch of rigmarole that ended up with us hitchhiking a ride with some other wedding guests who were driving in that direction on a golf cart, we got to the rehearsal dinner somewhat late but the guys were late getting back from Savannah too so we weren't *super* late lol. And so we had the rehearsal on the outdoor lawn facing the beach, adjacent to the restaurant where the reception would be held... super windy, and a lot of joking and snarky commentary at least on the bridesmaids' side XD Also, Caitlin's brother was taking the spot of "maid of honor", so one of the bridesmaids (Becky) dubbed him "bro of honor", to be shortened to 'bronor".
Then we headed back to the party house so Albert and I could drop our stuff and then we'd head to the Lohrman house (Josh's family) where the post-rehearsal party was being held. The party house was pretty much first-come-first-served, but the people who arrived first saved me and Albert the bestest biggest main bedroom because Albert had been the one arranging all the housing for the party house and overflow house for Josh and Caitlin's friends (whereas I was a total freeloader and left all the weddingness stuff up to him, so I had no real idea what was going on and just followed people around lol). So we picked up a Kevin and also a Lea (Atlanta friend) and Lea's friend Karen and also some other Josh-and-Caitlin friends and started walking over to the Lohrman house in pretty much pitch darkness XD Cellphone flashlight apps FTW. And so we ate delicious catered fried chicken and baked beans and cornbread and potato salad, and chatted with random strangers, and tried not to swear too much around the little kids XD;; And then I forget why we left early... oh right, we were going to buy gluten-free cake fixings for Lea because she'd baked one for Josh and then left it in Atlanta by accident lol. So Albert, me, Kevin, Erica, Lea, and Karen piled into our car (clown-car style) and drove to the only nearby supermarket open at that hour... but the darkness+flashing lights plus motion sickness triggered a horrible migraine in Lea, so she stayed in the car to recuperate (with Karen to nurse her) while the rest of us ran around the supermarket gathering supplies based on the recipe she gave us on her cellphone. Man, what did people do before smartphones?? So we got back to the party house, where people were already trickling back in and some people had started up the hot tub (well, large Jacuzzi really) in my+Albert's bathroom so I was like HOT TUB and changed into swimsuit and jumped in XD It fits 2 people very comfortably, or 4 if people squeeze together real tight... actually I'm trying to remember the chronology here, I could've sworn it was Lea and Karen in the hot tub to start with and then I displaced Karen... so I think maybe I'd hung out elsewhere in the house for a while, came back to the bathroom and saw Lea and Karen in the hot tub (right, I was glad to see Lea had recovered somewhat) and got in. And after a while I got back out and played Smash with Kevin and Albert while still in swimsuit + towel XD And so we played and had fun and talked to more strangers and eventually I couldn't stay awake anymore so I went to sleep...
Saturday morning (9/20, the day of the wedding), one of Josh and Caitlin's friends was a barista (for an actual non-Starbucks coffeeshop, I think probably in Seattle) so she was making coffee for everyone XD And she and her boyfriend had brought a bunch of supplies for breakfast stuff, so everyone milled around the first floor and the back balcony eating and talking and hanging out... after a while, Erica and I headed to the Brett house because Caitlin had wanted us to come over at noon to start wedding preparations (whereas the guys dinked around and had their pictures taken by the wedding photographer and etc.) so we helped put together some of the fancy napkin things and the place settings, and then all the bridesmaids (me, Erica, Becky, and Josh's sister Megan) + Caitlin retired to Caitlin's room to start doing makeup and hair and dress things and all. Becky was an amateur beautician (the oldest of many siblings/cousins, lots of practice) so she ended up doing my, Caitlin, and Caitlin's mom's hair and makeup. And Caitlin's cat Crowley kept wandering around throughout the process and hid under Caitlin's wedding dress at one point XD
It was drizzling, so we very carefully loaded Caitlin into the Brett family van and then Erica and Megan and I followed the van to the site. So instead of the outdoor lawn where we rehearsed, we moved indoors to the restaurant and went through the wedding there. Very interesting to be onstage lol, though mostly what I had to do was just stand there and look pretty XD I guess people usually cry during weddings, but I'm permanently defective in area of sentiment so I only got a bit choked up when I saw Josh holding back tears XD;; Oh, and the minister had chatted with Josh and Caitlin and their parents previously to get personal anecdotes for his marriage speech, and so he told the story about Josh getting the artificial diamond for his engagement ring to Caitlin via a circuitous route involving buying it but having it shipped to my parents (because it's illegal to sell artificial diamonds in the US for some reason, so he needed to find someone out of the country for them to send it to) and then my parents sent it to us and Albert sent it to Josh, and we all had to keep it top secret from Caitlin until he proposed XD;; Except the minister messed up Albert's name, lol, I think he said Alfred or something stupid like that instead. Got my name right though.
So yeah, finished the ceremony and all the guests went upstairs to the dining area for hors d'oeuvres (which I can never remember how to spell) and the bride+groom+family+bridesmaids+groomsmen hung around for the wedding photographer to take pictures, getting hungrier and hungrier T_T And Caitlin's brother had gone upstairs already (and he wasn't supposed to) and gotten drinks and food for himself and we were all like ARGH WHERE IS HE WE NEED TO TAKE PICTURES but then the person who went up to find him also sent down a waiter with hors d'oeuvres so we did get a bite to eat lol. So then after pictures, we lined up on the staircase and entered two-by-two as the DJ announced us, and sat down at our tables, and then food at last XD So tasty. Albert and I had accompanied Josh and Caitlin on their initial survey of Fripp Island and what it had to offer wedding-wise, so we'd helped out with the tasting but we'd forgotten what stuff we'd eaten lol, just remembered it was all pretty delicious. And then there were the toasts, where Caitlin's dad made a typical one, and then Jeff the best man made another one, and then Caitlin had asked her brother to make a toast and so her brother... made toast. Like, pulled out a toaster and made actual toast for her. And completely straight-faced kept blathering on about how he wasn't really sure why she wanted him to make toast for her, maybe this was some new tradition or fad in weddings, etc. etc. and we kept waiting for him to turn sentimental like a typical toast speech but no, there were only a few sideways allusions to how awesome Caitlin was and wishing them the best for their future, but it was pretty much all couched in a speech about, y'know, toasted bread. Best wedding toast ever XD
And then there was dancing with actual decent music (and the older folks gamely danced along with us young-people music lol) and cutting of cake and delicious macaroons and merengues, and several rounds of conga-lining, and at some point all the young people gathered at the open bar for a round of shots... the first wedding dance didn't actually happen till after a bunch of dancing and conga-lining, I dunno if that's typical or what... and then after a couple of hours of that, at 10 PM one of the guests was Casey Desmond who is a singer from Boston and so she performed and was pretty awesome XD We left a bit early though because friggin tired, and the plan was to assemble at the party house anyway so we went back and changed and tried to get the hot tub working but was only partly successful... and more Smash, and then people started trickling in so hanging out and chatting and whatnot.
Woke up the next morning (Sunday 9/21) squished to the side of our king-sized bed, and when I looked over beyond Albert I saw a couple that we were chatting with last night. Figures, lol. We were supposed to check out by 11 am so everyone ate breakfast and gathered their stuff and either left by then or else gathered in the Brett family house. There was a lot of chaos about the tuxedos that needed returning but that got sorted out on Facebook after I left lol... I left for Savannah around 12:30 pm, drove the rental car to the airport to return it and then flew back to Kansas City and drove all the way home, and around the last half-hour of driving I was so friggin tired... and then I got home and was like, shiiiiiiiiiit. I don't have the house key because I gave it to Jamie. Shoulda taken Albert's keys lol... so I called Jamie and asked her to give back my keys so I could get into my own house lol.
And then had an absolutely crazy week with two days in a row on necropsy, so it was almost a good thing that Albert stayed in South Carolina for the afterparty (till Thursday, and then I picked him up from the Manhattan airport)... though when he's gone I just sort of exist in a holding pattern lol. Cat was super snuggly during that time though, I think she thought we died and abandoned her, and then nobody was home during the day (since Albert usually is) to give her attention...
And then I got into a bike accident this past Monday morning (9/29) and I'm only just catching up from that... was coming down a hill on the sidewalk (which on this section of road is the marked bike trail) towards an intersection with a green light, and hit the side of a pickup truck that was unexpectedly turning right. Went tumbling, scraped up my knees and elbows, was not wearing a helmet (but now I am! learned my lesson), was mostly just shaken up but like at least three people stopped and got out of their cars to make sure I was okay, and one person called the police and ambulance for me and then this middle-aged lady stayed with me for like the whole rest of this episode. I was essentially fine so after the EMTs checked me over I declined to go to the hospital, and I told the police what happened and they also interviewed the guy whose truck I hit... my bike was also surprisingly unharmed aside from a severely crunched front wheel and the chain fell off. (As the bike repair people commented later, "crumple zone" XD) So as I was attempting to wheel it home, the guy asked if I needed a ride and I was like, well actually... XDDD So we threw my bike in the bed of his truck and he gave it and me a ride home. As we were chatting along the way, we figured out that he was actually one of the guys who was moving stuff in my+the other first-year residents' new office last Friday, and we were like "ohhh I *thought* you looked familiar" lol. So yeah, took the morning off to call my car insurance just in case the other guy's insurance tried to contact them, and also self-dress my scrapes and get the bike fixed... still healing, still a bit sore especially in my knees and right back/shoulder/neck where I landed and tumbled, but getting better.
And there is not enough time in a day to get everything done..........
