A Welcome back, Jack message is written on the wall of his coffee house - because what would Jack’s be without a cryptic message scrawled on his wall in blood red?
If honey's what you covet,
You'll find that I love it,
Because I'll guzzle

I've been cleaning up after someone for so long it's almost like instinct. I drop the vacuum in the step and I'm through the door, holding Miss Burroughs by the shoulders to keep her from moving while I bend over from one side to the other to look for the glitter of glass between her and the closest chair.
"Oh shit, are you okay? Careful! You don't have any shoes on, you'll get cut."
"It's okay, I can get it." But she goes to the chair.
I get out my dustpan and broom and some paper towels. "I'll just get this and go. It'll be on my own time. Just to be friendly. I've done this a hundred times."
"Really, you don't need to bother."
I stop working for a minute and sit back on my heels and I smile so she doesn't think I'm trying to be nasty. "Miss Burroughs, this job is the best thing to happen to me in a long time. Maybe you've never had to worry about getting evicted or how you're going to buy food, buut I've had to worry about it almost every day since I was a kid. So if you'll just humor me, I'll go home feeling a lot better knowing you won't be in the hospital with an infected foot and won't need me Thursday, either, or next week. So it's okay… it's best for both of us."
In a couple minutes, all the glass is cleaned up and I've double and triple checked for any tiny little bits I might have missed. Then I say goodbye, pack up my stuff, and carry my vacuum all the way from Elm to Cypress.
