If something goes down, let's hope I can avoid being arrested this time. I look down at the shiny tin badge pinned to my Cougar Ridge Deputy jacket. That's right, Gina, the Boy Scout is now the Law. Or part of it, thanks to Josh. My part in helping during the whole William Dale mess a few years ago. Josh needed people he could rely on, and after our rocky start (he's the one that arrested me), I'm glad to see I've earned his trust.
I head into Jack's for a hot chocolate. Jack isn't there, but the kid behind the counter knows the deputies here, and we get free drinks. The cocoa is good as it slides down my throat, but the warmth in my belly reminds me of another creeping warmth that I have spent the past five years trying to get away from. It's funny, I figured that I'd eventually lose my craving for booze, but it never goes away. Not completely. This town has a way of reminding you just how flawed and human you really are.
I head out and get back into my Outback. Despite the clouds, there isn't a stitch of wind, and that';s enough to make me wonder if there isn't something truly wrong about to happen. The town is decked out in spooky decorations, getting ready for the Halloween Festival. But truth be told, this town is spooky enough without the paper bats and jack o lanterns.
The ghosts don't wait for Halloween in this town.
