A post on Akito/Agito's sexuality.

Because these seem to be really popular nowadays!

1. So... what?

A: So... Oh! Great is a manga-ka who readily makes characters designed to be fan-servicey. Air Gear is no exception, and most if not all of the girls in the manga are very busty and shown in various states of undress regularly. That being said, Akito/Agito is a character who appears to be designed to, ahem, throw a bone to the yaoi fans. XD

2. You mean Akito's supposed to be gay?
Let's back up and take a look at some stats.

Akito/Agito's height: About 4' 8" tall. (Edward Elric is a LOT taller than this.)
Weight: About 86 pounds.
One of Akito's first moments in the canon: He grabs protagonist Minami Ikki and kisses him, in mid-air. In front of a lot of people he hasn't met before. He also has been referred to as "that transvestite" (probably a better translation would be "girly-boy") by at least one person.

That being said,

A: Well he sure as hell isn't supposed to be straight. XD
Seriously, there's no denying Akito/Agito definitely has 'yaoi stereotype' splashed over his character. That, and he's also clearly infatuated with the protagonist, Minami Ikki. They sleep in the same bed, occasionally bathe together, and have kissed a total of three times in the canon. Furthermore, it seems most of the time Akito is 'out' in Air Gear, he's either around, hugging, or clinging to Ikki.

Short of something akin to the OUT OF LEFT FIELD explanation suddenly given to Kio, Akito is gay, and in love/crushing on his Ikki-kun. ♥

3. So, all the males Akito's making friends with...

A: It should also be mentioned that apart from Ikki, he's never really shown interest in any other guys, past or present. (This could be attributed to that most Air Gear males are angry people who all gotta prove they're the "strongest," but. XD) So, I've been playing Akito as definitely affectionate (he's hugged more than a few campers randomly), but he's not a sort of person who tries to fall in love with anyone... even if it's obvious he really believes in love.

4. How does Akito regard females then?

A: This is a bit difficult to answer... he's just not shown interacting with them all that much. He clearly can make friends with females just as easily as males, but he's not as openly affectionate to them, nor does he particularly notice them. They're just sorta... there. I've been playing this sorta subtlely: while Akito might randomly hug and cling to males, he'll never do the same to females, and will probably be surprised if they do to him.

5. Okay, so what about Agito? Is it any different? It's two personalities in the same body, right?

A: ...Agito is a bit harder to figure out.
Agito distrusts everyone (except for Akito, naturally) and would probably hesitate to (if not flat out deny) call anyone else a "friend." He's probably only had one real friend his entire life, Udou Akira. (Who he does, apparently, get slashed with.) But, Udou Akira is clearly straight, and it's more or less clear that Agito regarded him more as a fellow comrade than anything else. Agito just... doesn't tend to get close to people. Thus, until something comes along to indicate otherwise, it'd probably be best to say Agito is "asexual" or "nonsexual."

6. So how does Agito regard females?

A. That's a LOT easier to answer. The time he deals with them, they're usually in his face talking about how cute his is, trying to hug him, or otherwise touch him. His reaction: pure and simple rage. He gets offended, shoves them away, and is outright repulsed. As a matter of fact, there's one scene later in the manga that has Agito injured and in the hospital, where he's treated by a very busty nurse who can't seem to help boobsquishing him. He hates every minute of being with her, and only tolerates it because he's, well, injured. XD

7. ...So why not declare Agito gay too and be done with it?

A. Besides that he never shows interest in anyone, there's an interesting thing to note. There's one other character Agito interacts with (the Iron Clock, Sano, for those in the know) that Agito clearly doesn't like. His choice insult for him is to call him a homo, and he only calls this particular character this. (Presumably, because said character tends to use the politer forms of Japanese language speech. Even though Akito also tends to be polite, it's more a "warm" politeness than using the very complicated grammar forms that denote polite Japanese.) Further complicating this issue is that Agito once calls him a homo to his face. Agito is wearing a full length wedding dress when he does this.

That said, I'm confused. XD Better to stick with "nonsexual" until Agito's similarly crushing on someone. Even if I will make the OOC joke: "Akito/Agito! Able to switch from 'innocent uke' to 'sassy uke' instantly! Two tastes in one!"

8. Is Akito/Agito a virgin?

A. He is only fourteen... so, I'd say yes. Besides that, Akito doesn't have the chance to form any relationships with other people before Ikki takes him away from his brother, really. (And I can't see Agito having sex very easily.) The only way he couldn't be would be to pair him with his older brother, an idea which doesn't exactly appeal to me. (Incest, noncon, ftw. x_x)

That's all. Nothing more to see here. XD
