So my knitting obsession continues. I now have lots and lots of yarn, and about 5 things i'd like to try to make. I'm currently working on a simple scarf to match the hat i made for Daughterpinx. I finished up the main body of the scarf last night, it should be long enough now. Tonight i have to cast off and weave in loose ends, etc. I made that one using one of my knitting boards that i acquired a couple of days after i realized how much fun the circle looms were. That one is interesting because i'm only doing a stockinette stich, but on the knitting board it's double-sided -- i.e., there is no "wrong side." You get the v-shaped stitch appearance on both sides. Iiiinteresting. There's also a "figure 8" wrap stitch that i may try next, which makes a very loose weave. It's supposed to be excellent for fancy yarns, like the kind that was on sale yesterday at Michael's. :-) I got some fluffy black "fun fur" sort of yarn and will probably make a small fashion accessory-sized scarf. My sister would probably get a kick out of that.
The other thing i want to try is to see if i can make a pair of gloves. I don't know why not. They were having a big after Christmas sale when i went back a week ago to pick up more yarn and i also acquired a bunch of knitting accessories including a
Wonder Knitter. I bought that kind of for the heck of it, though i figure it'll be handy for i-cord stuff. When i was messing around with that i realized that if i used the 5-peg wheel and single stich, i end up with a tube that's just about the perfect diameter for a finger. I don't see why i can't knit 5 of those, gather-bind the tops, and join the bottoms onto a fingerless mitt base. Anyway, i think i'll try it. I have a pattern for a fingerless mitt in my loom primer book, so i don't even have to figure that part out, bonus! The only real problem i can think of is if i have too many pieces of yarn ends that needs to be "woven in."
One of the best parts for me about the looms/knitting boards are that it's very easy to stop and start up again without losing track of what you're doing. So far i haven't made anything that requires strict counting of rows -- i just knit until the thing is a certain length so i can just use my tape measure on it to know if i'm done. However, i definitely DON'T have to worry about remembering how many stitches i have left per row. I guess that's not really a big problem with the needles either as long as you don't drop any -- if there's still loops on one needle, they need to be moved over to the other. But, my loom holds the stitches for me so i don't drop them anymore, yay! Yesterday was a perfect example. We were babysitting the cousins, and Daughterpinx was in the playroom with them while i was knitting in the family room and vaguely keeping on eye on them. Suddenly from Daughterpinx there came great dancing and jumping and holding oneself with an anguished look on her face. "RUN! GO! HURRY!" i said, and dropped my knitting and followed her to the bathroom. She made it, and i didn't lose any stitches. :-D A happy ending for all!
