Putting an end to things

May 20, 2007 11:13

I've read this in three different places over the past few days. I can't access Wordplayer (it's down at the moment), so I'm going to just have to trust that the three people who've posted the same thing were correct - as a reporter, I hate not having an origin source ... but then again, it's just a movie, not Senate judiciary hearings *G*.

The gist is this: According to one of the writers, Terry, the reason for Davy Jones's bad juju is that when he became captain of the Dutchman, it was with the terms that he could return to land and his "office" be lifted to lead a normal life in 10 years, IF his love remained faithful to him. Apparently he had a fickle lover, however, and it doomed him to only being able to set foot on land every ten years. (No clue if he carved out his heart over that and that's what *started* the whole "you gotta give up your heart to do this" thing or not.)

From this, many people (including me) infer that the same holds true for Will - if Elizabeth is faithful to him for ten years, he can leave his post with the Dutchman and resume a normal life.

Now I'm wondering ... is there a circumstance under which Will's return to mortality DOESN'T rely on Elizabeth's fidelity? Would he have to fall in love with someone else, or fall out of love with her first within that ten years? Would that someone else have to guard the chest with his heart (which still seems like a stupid thing to have happen, just from a mechanics POV - I appreciate the metaphor, but really ...) if that happens?

I'm just wondering if there's a way around Will having to pin his entire destiny on what Elizabeth will or won't do. Personally, I think it's ... well, hell, I'll say it - it's appalling that anyone would have to rely on someone else to decide their fate for them for ten years. Basically, it's imprisonment, no matter how much power Will has over the seas. He's a dog on a leash, and I'm not sure I like that end for the only character who's managed to maintain the most decency throughout the series. But maybe I'm just not seeing this right - I mean, you could make the argument it imprisons Elizabeth too, since if she were to banish Will to the seas forever, she couldn't set sail upon them ever again without worrying he'd take his wrath out on her.

And you lot probably suspected, but to bring it up again: Norrington dies trying to save Elizabet and her crew. Supposedly. Not that James wouldn't do something like this, but I consider him a major character from CotBP and I can't imagine any satisfaction from seeing him die this way, especially given what happened to him along the way. But, I admit I'm not the biggest Norrington follower in LJ fandom - are there fans who can accept this end for him and work with it in fanfic or meta?

ETA: Spoiler photos of Norrington on my Photobucket account as follows, thanks to the OrlandoLove forum (if you want to show these elsewhere, please download them and upload them to your own account first):
