I’ve been listening to Darren Hayes CD as well (Xmas present). "A Conversation with God", and, "I Just Want You to Love Me", are arguably my favourite songs. If you’re looking for new music I can recommend Jack’s Mannequin, Cartel, the Weepies, and Lene Marlin (Playing My Game - the title track of her first album - is my favourite song of all-time, even though it's heartbreaking!).
I haven’t read Persuasion, but I was reading through Jane Austin’s "Sense and Sensibility" before I got sidetracked with the Death Note manga. As a 22-year-old male living in 2008, I don’t think that her work was especially written for my audience, but I can see that her novels have their charm. I read Nicholas Sparks "A Walk to Remember" before I began reading "Sense and Sensibility", and that was a beautiful novel.
