Title: A Glimpse of Heaven
Pairing: Asou Haruto/Ikeuchi Aya
Genre: drama
Rating: G
Summary: Ikeuchi Aya dreams of her wedding day.
Ikeuchi Aya dreams of her wedding often.
The sky would be clear that day. Their house would be in total disarray as each of them goes through last-minute preparations: Ako rushing around, trying to find her missing white sandal (carried off by Ganmo), Hiroki being reprimanded for wearing his soccer cleats with his suit, Rika fixing her hair. Shioka would look pristine, maintaining her calm and smiling, as always; Mizuo would be checking the tofu shop to make sure it is properly closed, tears streaming down his cheeks as he moves about, having started crying since he woke up and unable to stop, the thought of giving their precious Aya away too much for him. Aya herself would be in her and Ako's room, sitting by her desk, knees folded and legs tucked in under the voluminous folds of her wedding dress, flowers woven carefully through her hair by Shioka and Ako, head bent over the desk as she writes letters, thank-you letters to all the guests even though the wedding is not yet over.
Ako tells her father to stop being overly dramatic before coming into their room and scolding Aya for sitting down like that and wrinkling her dress. Aya laughingly rises and lets herself be ushered downstairs, Shioka telling everyone to hurry up and get in the van. Aya has no bridal car but she doesn't mind, they've tied flowers in front of the van so it serves as her pseudo-bridal car and she thinks it is beautiful.
The sky is clear that day, and a cool breeze gently blows through the trees surrounding the small church, making the leaves rustle and sound like waves rolling on the ocean. With one arm linked with Mizuo's, both hands holding her small bouquet and an encouraging smile from Shioka, Aya walks down the aisle-she's walking on her own two feet, her steps are sure, she will not stumble and she is smiling and radiant-and everyone, everyone she knows: the regular customers of their tofu shop, Mari and Saki and Kouhei and Nakahara and their classmates at Higashikou, Asumi and Madoka-sensei and Takano-sensei and the rest of her classmates and teachers at the disability school; everyone is there and everyone is healthy, strong, smiling with her.
The sky is clear that day, the gentle breeze flutters through the wide, open windows of the church, the sound of rustling leaves a background melody to the wedding march that is being played. Aya walks down the aisle, her gaze on Asou Haruto, who is waiting for her at the altar. His face is solemn though his eyes are bright and full of mirth, as if he is sharing a joke with her that only the two of them knows. She bites back a giggle as her eyes meet his-he is dressed in a tuxedo, his own this time, he had insisted-and she thinks it rather makes him look like a penguin but she doesn't mind, she is rather fond of penguins and thinks the look fits him well.
Mizuo gives a great sniff (Ako rolls her eyes exasperatedly though if one would look closely she is teary-eyed as well), his eyes red and puffy by now as they reach the end of the aisle and it is time for him to give his daughter away; he gives Haruto a fierce glare which Haruto returns steadily, calmly-then Mizuo reaches out and messes up Haruto's hair, making everyone laugh, even stone-faced Asou-sensei. Haruto takes Aya's hand, mouthing, Your dad is scary, and she really does giggle this time, her fingers curling around his, holding on tight.
The details of the wedding vary from this point: Mizuno-sensei is Haruto's best man, sometimes he is the one marrying them and Kouhei is the best man, sometimes Hiroki. Ako is the bridesmaid, and Rika too, sometimes Mari and Saki. Ganmo is always the ring bearer, obediently trotting down the aisle to the delight of the guests. Haruto says his vows and Aya says her vows-and she is speaking, her voice is clear, she will not stutter or falter, she is radiant and smiling and Haruto is smiling back at her.
Haruto and Aya are declared husband and wife and the guests clap and cheer. The wedding bells begin to ring and Aya turns to Haruto and finds that she cannot see his face, he is being enveloped by a bright light, the bright light begins to envelope everyone and everything and the wedding bells begin to sound like an insistent, frightening, beeping noise. The claps and cheers turn into frantic, shouted orders-
-and Aya opens her eyes, blinded momentarily by the fluorescent lights on the ceiling of her hospital room. Mizuno-sensei and her mother and father are leaning over her, their faces paralyzed with fear and wet with tears, and they are visibly relieved when she turns her head slightly toward them.
She can hear the nurses murmuring about how close that was, they thought they wouldn't be able to revive her this time and it is worrying that her lapses are getting more and more frequent. Shioka clasps her hands, presses her cheek to hers and whispers, Ikite, Aya...
Aya moves her fingers into what is meant to be a weak response. Her eyes slide shut and she goes back to sleep-there isn't much she can do nowadays. Soon she is dreaming again.
