Characters: Nishikido Ryo, Sawajiri Erika, and Nishikido Aiko (an original character by
amaikoryori)
Rating: G
Summary: Aiko thinks her parents are stupid. Her parents think she's too clever. (a.k.a when Ryo and Erika have fight number 28367927389 and Erika takes Aiko out for cake.)
"You and 'touchan are stupid," Nishikido Aiko says, particularly enunciating the last word, which, her mother notes, she says in Kansai ben.
Nishikido Erika (nee Sawajiri) doesn't even flinch or gasp in shock. She continues walking, holding her daughter's hand firmly, merely flashing this mini-version of her and Ryo rolled into one skipping beside her a glance. "You learned that from your father, didn't you."
Aiko shakes her head emphatically. "No, Kimitaka-jichan taught me!" she says almost cheerfully, and Erika makes a mental note to murder Yoko, or ask his wife, a.k.a her best friend, Megumi (nee Sato), to murder him, and perhaps forbidding Aiko from going with Ryo to work might be a good idea, too.
Aiko is tugging on her hand. "'Kaachaaaaan."
"Yes, sweetie."
"What were you and 'touchan fighting about?" The question is asked with wide-eyed innocence and a thumb in the mouth.
Erika opens her mouth to answer, feeling hurt and anger welling up simultaneously as she remembers--that she can't remember now what the quarrel had been about. She settles for prying her daughter's thumb from her mouth instead. "Let's go have cake, okay?"
"Okay!" Aiko agrees, and Erika inwardly thanks her for being young and completely easy to distract.
In the cafe, Erika sits Aiko in a cozy, secluded corner (away from possible paparazzi) and orders two slices of cake at the counter: one strawberry shortcake and one chocolate mousse, which is Ryo's favorite, but she reasons in her head that that isn't the reason why she bought it, Aiko likes chocolate mousse, too (pushing away the thought that in fact, Aiko loves cake in general). She pays for her purchases and turns around, holding her tray firmly with both hands--and abruptly bumps into some moron who clearly is not looking where he's going.
"Shit," she exclaims, her brain mildly registering that this person is swearing as well. "Would you look where--Ryo?!"
"I'm sorry," he bursts out, taking the tray from her. "I'm sorry for--hey, you bought chocolate mousse for me!"
"I did not," she denies, stalking back to her table in indignation. "What are you doing here, how did you know we..." The question dies on her lips when she sees Aiko waving at them merrily, Erika's cellphone in hand.
Erika feels like throwing her arms in the air, in exasperation. "She's too clever," she murmurs, turning around and arching an eyebrow at her husband, trying hard not to smile.
"Yeah, well...she's your daughter," he points out, lips quirked in a half-grin.
"You mean our daughter." Their eyes meet, and he looks away, embarrassed.
"Look, I'm sorry, okay."
"I can't even remember what we quarreled about," she says softly.
He looks visibly relieved. "Does that mean I'm forgiven?"
"Maybe," she answers, turning around and laughing lightly, leading the way to their table.
"'Touchan!" Aiko shrieks happily, holding out her arms. "I'm glad you're here!"
"I'm glad he's here, too," Erika says as Ryo puts the tray down on the table and gathers their daughter in his arms; and he knows things are okay.
Until the next quarrel, at least.
