Okay, once more I've waited way too long to do this. But I usually like to read what other people have to say before weighing in with my own thoughts, and it takes a while to do that. Plus I am easily distracted. ;)

Besides, if Lucifer is possessing some poor dude, then just about anyone who consents can be it. I don't see how it has to be Sam and Dean.

Lucifer said the guy he's in now could barely contain him and it was all Lucifer could do not to burn out his host because the guy wasn't meant to be his vessel. Lucifer could conceivably burn through a succession of consenting hosts but never stay in one for long because they aren't strong enough. Sam, whose destiny from birth was to be that vessel, could contain Lucifer indefinitely.
