San Francisco still

My sister got me a job at her company for two weeks. I'm filling in until the official new hire gets there. The job is in customer service something or other, but my responsibilities are to play the top online games at their website to make sure they are working every day, and to play new games before they go live to make sure they work. On day two, I heard that my boss wanted me to stay on passed the two week mark. On day three (yesterday), I got yanked into a meeting about doing some technical writing for them for their developer site. Apparently they think it's a mess and they want me to rearrange it, make it flow better, etc, as well as write some documentation for something else they're working on. I barely know what they're doing so this is a lot to have flying into my face on day three.

Aside from that, I'm struggling with whether or not taking the full-time, long-term job will be good or not. First of all, I'm not a huge fan of The City. It doesn't get that much sunshine, it's windy and cold all the time, the buildings are close together, and the ocean that is visible is not pretty. I can feel that the job would become soul-sucking quite quickly. I can force myself to be that highly productive, apparently motivated, sacrificial employee again, and probably do well with the company, but it's a very grey thought.

I wanted to stay in Southern California, perhaps move to LA, or at least somewhere nice in Northern Orange County. I get a better creative vibe from LA than I do SF. SF is all about being a tech nerd working at a startup that lets you bring pets to work. LA is more about having multiple little artsy projects going and keeping yourself afloat by being ready and able to take any little short term job that comes along.

I've done the corporate thing for five years already. Another five years and I'll be almost 40. I really want to give LA and the arty thing a shot before I take the first job that comes my way up in SF, but I also don't want to skip out on a good opportunity--perhaps the only opportunity--that may come my way for a long time.

I could very well end up doing something corporate in Southern California again, but the sunshine and beach make a huge difference to my mental state. I'll be living poorly for quite a while no matter what job I get, and I'd rather have the sunshine and saltwater of SoCal than the buildings and shadow of SF.

I guess I have two more weeks to decide.
