AFYT, Dyke March, YWEP, Oh My!

Holy shit. About Face workshop today was so much fun....the choreographer came in, and we literally had to just form this circle and start 'free-stylin'', which was really crazy. And awkward. We have some awesome dancers and some, like me, not at all. And then we had to learn some crazy ass dance to Sean Paul's "Temperature", and then we had to go into this dance battle. I just sort of stayed to the side and watched all of these gay kids get down, and be, well, really queer. I liked how in the beginning, we had to run around and say this tongue-twister in different ways, and Lara Brooks shouts out, "Ok, now be fairies! Say it the gay way!" (It might be important to note that she was basically prancing around in a flowered skirt with some sort of shawl wrapped around her head--- hilarious.) But yeah. One of the assignments was to tell a little story through dance, or to represent a person you had known, so I definitely channeled Noura and Sarah Jane and did my little "mandy moore reaching out to jesus" move. It was OC.

So yeah. I am performing with them at the Lakeview Action Coalition on Wednesday night, rehearsal on Monday night. Thank god Megan Carney is back in town- I really cannot wait to work with her, finally- it's been like, a year since we met at 30 Under 30.

So yes, Miranda and I are now organizers for Dyke March. I am really, really excited for this. And luckily it's all girls around our age. They seem pretty cool so far, so I think it will be good. I'm amazed that just about 6 or 7 girls have taken on this huge responsibility- but I'm really stoked to help organize this and help out. Dyke March is very important. So, in the same vein, Miranda and I are going to Alt Q tonight to pass out some flyers, sell some buttons, etc. But most importantly, I finally get to see Carrie perform! Which is crazy exciting. I've missed her so much and I cannot wait to catch up with her and see her sing. We met last year when we were both volunteering for Equal Marriage Now (actually we first met at Dyke March, which she made very fun for me and shoobie). Oh, but another cool thing, Erin Mckeown is performing at Alt Q as well, and I used to be really into her music. I still sort of am. I found it very funny that The L Word used her "If you want to be a lady" song in season two, right when Jenny and Shane decided to room together. Very fitting. And cool that an L Word artist is coming to perform in chicago tonight- eh? Eh.

Ok next up this summer, besides working at Starbucks, doing About Face Youth Theatre (what what?), interning at the Gay Games, volunteering for lambda legal, organizing dyke march....*breath*- I am doing this Mentor program at the Young Women's Empowerment Program. I'll be training to be an outreach worker, and to quote the YWEP I will "provide outreach to girls who have histroy of working in the sex trade and human trafficking, and give support, resources, free supplies (condoms, food, clothes, I'm guessing)". So yeah. Oh and I am also helping GLSEN out with the Youth Leadership Summit again. So basically my summer is going to be REALLY gay and awesome, as usual...you know, to make up for all those wonderful opportunities I miss out on at Mount Holyoke. Ok, but in response to that, I'm thinking about contacting the girls involved with C.A.U.S.E. and asking if they would be interested in forming a subgroup that focuses on GLBT outreach, programming, and community service. You know, like some schools' GSAs, like Pride Alliances, have Special Action Coalition subgroups that take care of the GLBT services, and all non-social aspects of the cause. What do you guys think? I mean, I don't want to anger True Colors. But then again, my life is about working for the queer community, and I can't do that in True Colors. And I cannot stand to wait an entire semester without doing anything with my passion and energy. No offense, but improv theatre just doesn't cover it. Where are the rallies? The marches? The fundraisers? There's too much to miss.
