The Formphasers: Dirge of the Dragons
Stage Thirteen: The Legacy Left
Sungmin pulled on a black shirt, looking down at the dismally coloured cloth. He smoothed out the material and pulled a dark robe around his shoulders. He winced as his torso protested lightly, a little spark of pain shooting through his body. The wounds he had sustained from war were still hurting him.
Painfully, he held the robe together while joining the two clasps that held it in place. Moving slowly so as not to spark any more pain, he lowered his arms and looked at his full appearance, making sure that he looked presentable.
Sighing with something akin to sorrow, he turned around only to be startled by his mate who had appeared directly behind him.
“Are you ready?” Kyuhyun asked, his expression sombre. Sungmin lowered his gaze. The correct answer would be: No, I’m not ready. But Sungmin’s mouth worked of his own accord and he nodded.
“As ready as I can ever be,” the feline swallowed. Kyuhyun put his hands on the shoulder of his mate, careful not to put any pressure on his wounds. Sungmin raised his head slightly.
“I can feel your body shake. I am not prepared either. I do not wish to see the bodies of my friends in their graves,” Kyuhyun whispered. Sungmin bit his lip and then wrapped Kyuhyun in a tight embrace, a few tears falling from his eyes.
“I have no desire to see our people being laid to rest in the ground too early before their time. But as a ruler, I have no choice,” Sungmin buried his face into Kyuhyun’s shoulder. The wolf ran his fingers through Sungmin’s hair in an attempt to soothe his mate.
“Eagles, bears, canines and felines alike are all resting in the soil. Today, we will honour them no matter how difficult it may seem,” Kyuhyun murmured. He gently kissed the side of Sungmin’s neck before marking the spot lightly with his teeth.
“Not now, we have a mass funeral to attend,” Sungmin gently pushed Kyuhyun back.
Kyuhyun kissed him softly on the mouth, “Let us show our people that we honour them.”
Sungmin nodded and followed his mate out of the room. The two of them walked beside each other down the long, brightly lit hall towards the front gates of the palace. Kyuhyun’s hand brushed against his and the canine entwined his fingers with Sungmin’s.
They met Jaejoong and Yunho at the front of the gates. The four looked at each other solemely. One side of Jaejoong’s face was bandaged. His face had been cut from the bridge of his nose, down his cheek to the base of his jawbone.
Yunho was no better off. His whole arm was in a sling and a ring of stitches was on his upper arm from where he blocked his mate from receiving more damage. They had been ambushed towards the end of the battle and the two of them had only survived thanks to the arrival of Jongwoon and his battalion.
“We will meet the rest of them at the hillside,” Jaejoong spoke in soft tones.
“And him?” Sungmin asked.
“He is there too,” Yunho confirmed. “We sent him there with Ryeowook.”
“Good. Shall we go?” Kyuhyun led the way out of the palace and down the path that they used when they had gone to Jungsu’s funeral.
!*!*!*!*!
All canines, felines, eagles and bears that were left had gathered on the hill. At one time, they would not all fit. But with the war, most of their people could stand on the hill with space for the fallen with only a few on the other side of the river that meandered past the peaceful landscape.
Sungmin felt his skin prickle as he looked at the large holes cut out of the hillside for the dead of the felines. Those holes had been dug in almost the entire hill. From where he stood, he could see a dozen families going from one body to another, trying to find relatives or the remains of relatives.
The feline walked towards the middle of the hill where Youngwoon, Ryeowook and Donghae stood. A cold sweat broke out on his forehead and he started to tremble. He reached his friends and looked down at the bodies there.
Hankyung and Heechul were still in their fur and had been prepared to the best of the Master of Passing’s ability. Eunhyuk lay a few inches farther, dressed in jewels as his adoptive name stated. They looked at peace with the world.
“The dragons have not yet relinquished the conquered lands. Perhaps they will keep them unless we try to drive them from the other lands. We only stopped them from taking ours,” Youngwoon said, looking sadly at the bodies of his friends.
Sungmin looked at him sharply, “You mean they could try to take our lands again?”
“Potentially, they could. However, we cut down many of them despite their killer assets. The poison works well against them. But it is awful to see them die. The pain in their eyes as they fall is enough to make me wish I had not coated my weapons in the poison.”
“It is that poison that won us the battle. If we had not done so, we would have fought a prolonged war and lost more than we did. As it is, we lost almost as many as we had in the canine war with just this fight alone,” Sungmin said, looking at the bodies of canines and felines that dotted the hill.
“I killed the one who took Jungsu’s life. It was the Komodo who came to us with the message from the Dragon King. I knew it was him because I could see Jungsu’s blood on his fingertips. He was eager to meet me. And I was eager to introduce him to the afterlife,” Youngwoon glared at the grass.
“It was the same with Zhoumi. When Henry was wounded by Jisung, he returned the favour. He was the one who shot the Dragon King in the eye,” Sungmin looked at his feet.
“No wonder he kept trying to attack Jisung whenever he got the opportunity,” Ryeowook murmured.
“Jisung had a serrated sword. He stabbed Henry before slicing open his throat. Zhoumi wouldn’t stop trying to kill Jisung. He took the opportunity to when Sungmin was battling him to exact his revenge. He got revenge for Henry while killing the Dragon King at the same time. It was quite effective,” Youngwoon explained to the ocelot.
“How is it that Henry still remains alive?” Sungmin asked in wonder.
“Zhoumi tore his clothes to stem the flow of blood. Then he took him to the hospital before going after Jisung himself,” Youngwoon offered.
“Yes and found him in battle with you. So I waited to attack, just in case you performed the deed for me. But then he knocked you down,” Zhoumi interrupted, appearing with absolutely no sound whatsoever.
“Where is Henry?” Ryeowook asked, looking around in curiosity as though the small sun bear might pop out from behind a tree.
“He is recuperating. He wished he could be here but - ”
“You wouldn’t let him come?” Sungmin finished, a slight grin appearing on his face.
Zhoumi smiled sheepishly, “No, I wouldn’t. He needed to rest.”
Just then a gong sounded, announcing the beginning of the ceremony. The Master of Passing stood at the top of the hill, his voice carrying with the wind. Sungmin sought out Kyuhyun and stood beside him, wishing to feel the presence of his mate.
“Today, we commemorate the lives of many. We pay respect to those who fell in the war and who protected us from the onslaught of Komodo dragons who wished to take our lands. It is because of them that we have survived. We thank them,” the Master of Passing said.
Youngwoon looked up at the sky. Lazy clouds drifted across the blue haze. He wondered if Jungsu had come to meet Hankyung, Heechul and Eunhyuk when they had passed on. Donghae was looking at his mate’s body. The dingo stared at Eunhyuk, tears blossoming in his eyes but never falling.
“The names of those that had fallen are as follows, Kang Heesung, Dong Minwoo, Kim Soohae…” the list continued.
Sungmin leaned into Kyuhyun, purring softly as he did so. His mate wrapped an arm around him and pressed a kiss to the top of his head. Sungmin bit his lip and swallowed his tears. He had to remain composed throughout this ceremony as was required for a monarch.
“It’s okay, Kitten. You can cry if you wish,” Kyuhyun whispered, tightening his hold on his mate’s body.
“I should remain composed,” Sungmin swallowed. Kyuhyun sighed, a soft and peaceful sound.
“You should. But it does not mean that you must. Cry if that is what you want,” Kyuhyun leaned his head against Sungmin’s.
“I wish we had never engaged in the war,” Sungmin murmured.
“Then we would probably be dead or about to be executed right now and our people would be vanquished. Even though we lost many to the Komodos, we are still surviving and still living. And it’s because of you that this happened. We are still free,” the wolf kissed his mate’s neck, trying to provide some comfort.
“It hurts, Kyu. It hurts to cry,” Sungmin shut his eyes tightly against the tears that had formed. One rebellious drop slid from his eye and down his cheek.
Kyuhyun reached up and wiped the tear away, brushing Sungmin’s face with a gentle touch, “It may hurt now. But I will soothe that. And I will be here to wipe away your tears. So cry for them. Show the people how much they meant to you.”
“And you, Kyuhyun? Who will dry your tears?” Sungmin asked. Kyuhyun leaned down and pressed a gentle kiss to Sungmin’s mouth.
“I have you and therefore, I have no reason to cry. My sorrow for our friends is not greater than my love for you. I feel pain for the loss but my happiness at your survival overpowers that. You stayed alive,” Kyuhyun slid his hand down Sungmin’s arm and curved his hand to fit around his mate’s.
“Thank you,” Sungmin’s eyes brimmed with tears and he blinked once before they spilled over. He made no noise and he made no movement. The only motion was the tears snaking down his face.
Sungmin cried for Heechul, Hankyung, Eunhyuk and even Jungsu, all friends who he had lost in this war against the dragons. He cried for the people they had lost and the land that had been taken. He cried for his friends who had been driven out of their homes by the violent race of dragons.
Kyuhyun brought him into an embrace, not caring that for the next few hours he might have to wear a wet shirt. His sole focus was comforting his mate.
“…Hankyung, Kim Heechul…” the Master of Passing continued his list of those who had passed on. At the mention of those two names, the six monarchs bowed their heads in respect. “…Lee Hyukjae or as he liked to be known, Eunhyuk…” the Master of Passing went on.
Sungmin dried his tears and looked up at the sky. He hoped that Hankyung, Heechul and Eunhyuk were okay. He hoped that Jisung would have another start, as a kinder and maybe better person than he had become.
Sungmin knew as soon as Jisung had started to die that he had seen the real king. He had seen the male who was afraid and scared of ruling wrong. A king who governed by their mantra in order to seem powerful and strong. Sungmin realized that Jisung had still been a boy, moulded and conformed to be a monarch through cold means. And it was because of this that Sungmin wished for Jisung to have a better start.
!*!*!*!*!
“Emperor Sungmin! You must read this! It is of complete urgency!” Jongwoon rushed through the halls of the Amnesty Palace, looking for the feline ruler. Sungmin poked his head out of the library from where he had been documenting the war with Ryeowook.
“What is it?” Sungmin asked as Jongwoon stepped into the library. The Siberian tiger was panting heavily from running all over the palace in his search for Sungmin.
“It’s a letter,” the feline panted as he held out the envelope.
“Who from?” Sungmin took the paper and opened the flap.
“The Komodo Dragons,” Jongwoon answered. Sungmin stopped opening the letter. He looked at the envelope in his hands with apprehension before he pulled out the paper.
To the rulers of felines and canines,
We, the race of Komodo Dragons, apologize deeply for our actions against you. Since the death of our king and depletion of our race, we have decided that we are no longer in need of the lands we possess. We shall relinquish the bear and eagle lands to the races which previously owned them. We no longer have needs for them and as such, we have decided to give them to those less fortunate. We now wish to live in harmony with the other races and apologize for any inconveniences that you might have suffered. We are making revisions to the goals we wish to reach as a race and questioning morals and ideals for ourselves. For you, we wish a future.
Lee Jaewook, Dragon King of the Komodos
Sungmin looked up from the letter in complete astonishment. He had definitely not expected anything like this. A letter of contempt, insult or warning perhaps but never a letter of apology. He handed the letter to Ryeowook who scanned it before handing it over to Jongwoon.
“The bears and eagles can go home,” Ryeowook smiled.
“Well, the dragons certainly didn’t waste their time on pleasantries. ‘For you we wish a future?’” Jongwoon wrinkled his nose in distaste.
“They have just lost a war; you cannot expect them to be cheerful about that. A Komodo highly prizes honour and pride. They would think themselves above us even when we are more powerful,” Sungmin laughed.
!*!*!*!*!
Sungmin watched the bears on the front lawn of the castle from a window high above. He could see Zhoumi helping Henry along by carrying him on his back. They were preparing to leave. Jaejoong and Yunho were also getting ready to go; gathering all their eagles and supplies for the flight back to their homelands.
“It will be quiet around here without our friends,” Kyuhyun’s soft voice made Sungmin smile.
“Yes it will but I would rather them be at home and everything be at peace than be all together during a time of war,” Sungmin turned to face his mate.
“I would rather we all gathered here during a time of peace,” Kyuhyun grinned, brushing a few strands of hair out of his face. Sungmin rolled his eyes.
“Even though we have fought a war, you are still a brat. I respect Ahra even more now for putting up with you for all these years,” Sungmin poked Kyuhyun on the forehead.
“And tonight I will find you in my bed despite my…qualities,” Kyuhyun replied.
“Do not insult me, I am not so easy. Persuade me join you in bed tonight,” Sungmin went onto his tiptoes and kissed Kyuhyun.
The wolf smiled and closed his eyes, “I guarantee that you will be there.”
The two stood in silence for a while, watching as the bears began to head off in the direction of their territory. Sungmin waved to Zhoumi who had phased and was carrying Henry back to their lands on his back. Sungmin turned back to Kyuhyun and cocked his head to the right slightly.
“Will everything be at peace now?” Sungmin asked. Instead of answering, the wolf gestured for Sungmin to look behind him.
“Look,” Kyuhyun pointed out of the window. Sungmin turned around and gasped in delight. The eagles had transformed and were now flying through the air. Hundreds of eagles took flight and soared into the sky. The birds danced and the calls of the animals drifted through the air as they flew towards the eagle lands.
Sungmin watched the beautiful spectacle. His hand entwined with Kyuhyun’s and as they watched their friends head home, everything was where it should be. The two monarchs stood in the window, watching as the birds and bears travelled back to where they belonged. Back to the homes that Jungsu, Hankyung, Heechul and Eunhyuk had fought to return them to.
“Everything’s all right,” Kyuhyun whispered as a response to Sungmin’s question. The feline nodded.
“I know,” Sungmin smiled.
