The Formphasers: Dirge of the Dragons

Stage Two: Life Has Prospered

The area was quiet. Then the air rang with a loud cry of a cat. From around the corner of the hall, the feline ran, looking behind it to see if its pursuer was still there. Not two seconds later, a large canine came, hot on the tail of the cat.

The two of them ran through the hall. One was trying to run away while the other was trying to catch. The feline began to tire but pushed on. It had no desire to be killed. The cat screamed as the canine jumped onto its back. The feline fell and rolled over. The canine jumped up and growled softly.

The feline lay there, looking at the canine. Then, in the blink of an eye it rolled over and took off again, running away from the canine that had trapped it. Snarling, the canine ran after it, cursing itself for letting the cat get away again.

The two ran through a maze of halls. The feline careened around a corner and took off towards an open window. The canine saw that the cat was trying to escape and doubled its efforts to catch it. The feline was just at the window when a growl made it look behind.

The canine tried to stop but ended up crashing headlong into the feline. The two of them skidded on the polished floors and crashed into a table, knocking over an expensive vase that was probably given as a gift.

The feline’s ears went back. It couldn’t get out of the place it was in. Hissing softly, it looked for a way out. The canine stood there, golden eyes focused solely upon its prey. The cat batted at it, trying to push it away. It didn’t work.

The cat jumped, trying to leap over the dog that stood before it. The canine looked up and phased, arms wrapping around the cat as it flew through the air. The cat semi-phased in mid air out of pure shock. The two half-forms clashed together, falling back in a tangle of claws, teeth and shrieks.

“Do you give up?” the canine gasped, holding the waist of the feline.

“No, I shall never give in!” the feline giggled.

“Then I will make you surrender!” Cho Kyuhyun grinned, and bent his head, gently licking at the skin of his mate. He then ran his fingers along the sides of the man in his arms.

Lee Sungmin squealed with laughter. He tried to worm his way out of Kyuhyun’s grasp to no avail. The tickling was making his arms weak and he couldn’t do anything but try to push those teasing fingers away.

“Your Highnesses, I have been asked to give you a message from Ahra. She says not to soil your clothes or disturb your appearances,” Eunhyuk said, looking down from a balcony at the two monarchs who were lying amidst debris and shattered pieces of a vase and obviously, not as clean as they were before.

“Oh come on, Eunhyuk. The ceremony will not be starting for another hour and a half,” Sungmin complained good-naturedly. Eunhyuk gazed at him severely.

“You know that you should have kept yourselves presentable for the ceremony regardless,” Eunhyuk said.

“We are the rulers of this place. We can do what we like,” Kyuhyun waved his hand dismissively.

“I cannot believe that my sibling is such a brat. Hyukjae, what shall we do with him?” Ahra appeared beside Eunhyuk on the balcony.

“I am not a brat. I merely do what I want and take what I like,” Kyuhyun wrapped his arms around Sungmin’s waist.

“How do you stand him?” Ahra asked, looking at Sungmin.

“It’s hard but I manage quite well,” Sungmin purred. Kyuhyun grinned up at the others.

“You are such a smug creature. I pray your ego dissipates before your head combusts,” Ahra snarled at her brother. Kyuhyun wrapped his arms around Sungmin’s waist and nuzzled the back of his neck.

“My ego’s just fine. Do not be jealous. It is not my fault that you are not as amazing as I,” Kyuhyun murmured into Sungmin’s skin.

“Oh yes, I am obviously turning green,” Ahra turned away, exasperated. “Do not be late. This ceremony is of utmost importance.” With that, Ahra turned on her heel and marched away.

“Eunhyuk, how much time do we have?” Sungmin asked, looking up at the guard. Eunhyuk was about to answer but was interrupted by the arrival of Ryeowook.

“Emperors Sungmin and Kyuhyun, Jongwoon says that - what are you doing on the floor?” Ryeowook asked, looking at Kyuhyun and Sungmin, obviously confused. Eunhyuk rolled his eyes.

“These two have been up to who knows what, smashed the vase that Jaejoong sent for their anniversary and have ruined their appearances for the ceremony,” Eunhyuk said, listing off the all their offences on his fingers.

“Emperor, you know that this ceremony is important for us. We’re unveiling the first dwelling that houses canines and felines together. The House of Dance is where both canine and feline dancers shall come together,” Ryeowook sighed frustratedly.

“You know as well as I that that opening is merely a façade. The palace was the first place to house both canines and felines,” Kyuhyun answered before Sungmin could.

Ryeowook had lived with canines for the past two years but he was still slightly afraid of those in higher power than he. Ryeowook was a revered scholar who was training underneath Jungsu and ranked as high as the Eunhyuk and Jongwoon. Only Kyuhyun he treated with careful respect because he was in higher power and therefore (in Ryeowook’s mind) more frightening.

“That is true but the people must see a public place that needs to be opened,” Ryeowook answered, his voice slightly higher. He looked as if he were about to say more but Eunhyuk interrupted.

“Jongwoon is here,” Eunhyuk pointed. Ryeowook smiled at the arrival of his mate, his whole countenance lighting up. With fluid strides and a serene smile, Jongwoon came.

“Sungmin and Kyuhyun, the ceremony begins in a few minutes. Surely you should be at the Main Forum?” Jongwoon asked, looking at the two of them surrounded by debris. Then his eyes narrowed slightly. “Kyuhyun, could you please stop frightening my mate? I can feel his trembles from here.”

“He’s the most powerful canine of all. Who wouldn’t be fearful?” Sungmin laughed softly. Jongwoon rolled his eyes and went to Ryeowook and wrapped an arm around him.

“And you’re the most powerful feeling. Do try to keep him on his leash. There have been multiple times when - ”

“ - the ceremony is beginning. We are late!” Eunhyuk interrupted. Immediately, Sungmin was on his feet. He pulled Kyuhyun up and the two phased, running towards the entrance of their palace.

!*!*!*!*!

The night was calm and peaceful. Crickets were chirping and gentle hums of other insects penetrated the stillness. Sungmin listened in half-phase, his black ears twitching as they picked up the sounds of the night.

“Are you coming to bed?” Kyuhyun asked. He lay on the luxurious and comfortable floor bed of the felines.

When the Amity Palace had been built, both Kyuhyun and Sungmin realized that they needed to incorporate both styles of living. Canine beds had been done away with as it was mutually agreed that feline beds were more comfortable.

The feline style of baths was removed because canines had more lavish bathing chambers. It was more comfortable to let heated water trickle in than it was to have cold water. Canines and felines alike used the same sort of tables and chairs but had different designs. They had managed to incorporate an even balance between of canine and feline lifestyle.

“Yes, I come,” Sungmin tore himself from the window and padded over to the bed. He knelt and looked at Kyuhyun for a moment.

“What is it?” the canine ruler asked. Sungmin smiled and pressed a kiss to his mate’s forehead.

“I’m grateful for you,” Sungmin answered simply. He lay down beside Kyuhyun and burrowed into him.

“I love you too.”

Kyuhyun’s hand found one of his ears and began stroking the soft black fur that covered it. Sungmin purred softly in contentment.

“I wish the stars were visible tonight,” Sungmin murmured, breathing in Kyuhyun’s scent.

“They are beautiful. But you more so than they,” Kyuhyun’s lips were pressed to his hair. Sungmin looked up, meeting golden eyes.

“You flatter me too much,” Sungmin said, cheeks turning a light pink.

“You deserve to be flattered,” came Kyuhyun’s response. Sungmin was about to respond when a light flicker caught his eye. He sat up, and looked around. The same flicker came again. He turned to the window and saw a flame rise from the horizon for the smallest second before vanishing.

“Sungmin? What is wrong?” Kyuhyun pushed himself up and rested a hand on Sungmin’s arm. The feline turned to him, eyes uncertain.

“Did you see that?”

“What?”

“That flash on the horizon a moment ago. It looked like fire,” Sungmin looked back. There was nothing now.

“Where was it?” Kyuhyun asked.

“On the very horizon. A little to the right of the direction of the eagle lands.”

“There’s nothing out there. It’s just wasteland,” Kyuhyun said.

“Hmm…perhaps I am tired. This day was particularly draining,” Sungmin lay back down. His breath caught as Kyuhyun slipped a hand underneath his loose night shirt, fingers teasing their way up his side.

“Don’t fall asleep yet,” Kyuhyun breathed. Sungmin burned.

!*!*!*!*!

“King Jisung, we are ready.”

“Certain? The flames have been prepared and the soldiers are ready?”

“Affirmative.”

“Very well then. Five years after our return we shall take back what is rightfully ours. Give the signal. At dawnbreak, we move!”

!*!*!*!*!

“WAKE UP!” Sungmin awoke rather abruptly, feeling as though he hadn’t slept all that long. He felt a weight on his back and turned to his right to see Kyuhyun half lying on him. He was more conscious at the moment, apparently already awake when the call came.

“Ahra, take your noise elsewhere. We are sleeping,” Kyuhyun growled. Sungmin looked the other way to see Kyuhyun’s sister leaning against the doorframe with a smirk on her face.

“The day grows old. Do not waste it!” Ahra chirped.

“Leave us,” Kyuhyun ordered. Ahra ignored him.

“What’s going on?” Sungmin asked, trying to rise. He was pushed down again by Kyuhyun. The blankets and sheets were pulled around him so only his head was visible.

“Have fun, Kyuhyun? How well does your mate dance for you?” Ahra grinned.

“That is none of your concern,” Kyuhyun snapped.

“He has very nice skin,” Ahra commented. Sungmin felt confused. He tried to get up again but was pushed once more onto his stomach. This time, Kyuhyun moved over top of him.

“What are you doing?” Sungmin asked, struggling slightly.

“Possessive, isn’t he?” Ahra observed, speaking to Sungmin.

“If I walked into your sleeping chamber with Donghee, you would act the same,” Kyuhyun snarled.

“Only I call him Donghee, thank you,” Ahra said mildly. She straightened and held out her arms. “Junki! Come now! The emperors are awake.”

A small child with blue eyes crawled towards her. She picked him up and smiled. Ahra bowed before leaving the two alone. The child waved as he clung to his mother.

“What was that all about?” Sungmin inquired, wanting to know why he had been squished for several minutes while the Cho siblings exchanged words.

“Your body is for me alone. I refuse to let anyone see what is mine,” Kyuhyun answered. Sungmin smiled.

“You know I am only for you. And you also know that whenever Ahra brings her child to us, we are the sitters of the day,” Sungmin kissed Kyuhyun lightly before taking his discarded night shirt and pulling it over himself.

“Unfortunate that,” Kyuhyun commented.

“You love Junki! How is taking care of him unfortunate?” Sungmin asked.

“No, I meant that it was unfortunate that he has Ahra for a mother.”

Sungmin aimed a weak hit towards Kyuhyun’s head before disappearing into the bathing chamber. He did not know why but a shiver of unease flickered swiftly down his spine.

!*!*!*!*!

“We have prepared?”

“Yes.”

“Phase.”

Fifty men and women shifted their forms, becoming deceptive, scaled beasts. Dragons. One of them who was larger than all the others by a good amount turned to them. Clicking sounds came out of its mouth.

“ATTACK!”

!*!*!*!*!

There! Second stage done! Whoo! That took a while. I’m sorry the update took a long time. I have been quite busy. But now I’ll hopefully be updating sooner than I was before. o(^^)o Thanks for reading! I love all of you!
